What can you expect?

The Snow Safety Assistant Supervisor - Duty Forecaster works to effect avalanche mitigations in accordance with the overall avalanche control program, minimizing operational interruptions and forecasting avalanches within the operational boundary of the ski area. This position communicates weather and snowpack data to assist in the production of the daily hazard rating and publishing the daily avalanche forecast. The Snow Safety Assistant Supervisor - Duty Forecaster works under the direction of, and primarily reports to the Snow Safety Supervisor - Lead Avalanche Forecaster and Senior Supervisor of Public Safety. This position works alongside Avalanche Technicians, the Duty Forecaster, and the Public Safety Director and Ski Patrol Supervisors. The Snow Safety Assistant Supervisor collaborates with Ski Patrol Supervisors to direct mentoring and identify training needs to help develop route leaders within each shift.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain all areas within the Ski Area boundary in a safe manner and to provide, within the ski area's program, comprehensive avalanche control when required, including opening terrain in a timely fashion, completing all daily duties pertaining to safety, and implementing avalanche control strategies - maintaining the existence of a safe and enjoyable skiing environment, reducing overall risk.
  • Perform the avalanche hazard forecast and oversee the daily avalanche control operations with minimal oversight.
  • Collecting pertinent data including weather, snowpack, and avalanche observations.
  • Providing first aid and participating in lift evacuations, and other Ski Patrol tasks, when required.
  • Communicating changing weather, closures, and atypical operating conditions.
  • Maintaining avalanche closures and signage.
  • Function within a team environment adhering to all aspects of an Avalanche Safety Plan.
  • Maintaining a cheerful and courteous relationship with the skiing public.
  • Willfully mentor Mountain Operations staff and liaison with guests in all regards pertaining to Avalanche Safety and Hazard.
  • Administrative and Reporting Responsibilities
    • Timely completion of documentation and accurate record keeping of data- weather, snow profile, avalanche control/observations and explosives use.
    • Assist with inventory and maintenance of all equipment that pertains to the avalanche control program.
    • Following, acting as a role model, and enforcing company policies, in a fair and instructive manner.
    • Liaise with the Public Safety Director and Mountain Operations Manager when required.
    • Responsible for maintenance and accuracy of all avalanche signage.
    • Mitigate risk through daily risk assessments, control measures, and accident investigation.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of ski patrol and/or snow safety work experience.
  • Natural Resources Canada Explosives Regulatory Division Approval Letter.
  • AB Non-Mining Blaster's Permit - Avalanche Control.
  • Canadian Avalanche Association Avalanche Operations Level 2 Certificate.
  • Practitioner or Professional Member of the Canadian Avalanche Association in good standing.
  • CAA Advanced Weather, Avalanche Control Blasting (Recommended).
  • Competent Canadian Avalanche Association InfoEx Moderator.
  • Knowledge of all terrain and control routes. Competent avalanche control route leader.
  • Medical experience in high stress situations - Valid Advanced Wilderness First Aid/EMR or higher.
  • Proven leadership and communication skills, both written and verbally.
  • Excellent customer service skills, especially in high stress environments such as accident scenes.
  • Must be neat, alert, punctual and dependable, acting as a leader and mentor.
  • Prepared to work flexible schedules e.g. weekends, holidays, nights, extended hours.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Valid Alberta motor vehicle operator's license. Able to operate UTV, highway vehicle, snowmobile.
  • This position requires the ability to ski for long periods of time (spending the day in ski boots is normal), constant trunk rotation, frequent lifting, pushing/pulling of equipment, patients, and tools (up to 45 kg).
  • Requires working at heights, occasionally climbing ladders, ascending inclined slopes up to 60% (30°) There will be exposure to extreme environments (temperature and wind) and remote work.
  • This role may operate machinery and works around moving equipment. Candidates are required to provide Vibram® soled winter boots; ski equipment in good working order; avalanche safety gear (3 antennae beacon, shovel, and probe); an ASTM helmet; and appropriate mid and base layers for a winter environment. Outer uniform pieces (liner, jacket, pants, toque) are provided.
  • This position requires the ability to work around and travel in helicopters to perform certain tasks.
