What can you expect?

Avalanche Technicians work to effect avalanche mitigations in accordance with the overall avalanche control program, within the scope of their training, certifications, and abilities. The role communicates information, maintains equipment, and performs additional tasks in the Ski Patrol/larger public safety environment. Avalanche Technicians work under the direction of, and primarily report to the Snow Safety Supervisor - Lead Avalanche Forecaster, and work alongside other Avalanche Technicians, Duty Forecasters, and the Senior Supervisor of Public Safety, Ski Patrol Supervisor and Ski Patrollers.

Key Responsibilities

  • The primary responsibility of this role is to maintain all areas within the Ski Area boundary in a safe manner and to provide, within the ski area's program, comprehensive avalanche control when required, including opening terrain in a timely fashion, completing all daily duties pertaining to safety, and implementing avalanche control strategies - maintaining the existence of a safe and enjoyable skiing environment, reducing overall risk.
  • Providing first aid and participating in lift evacuations and high angle rope rescue, when required.
  • Communicating changing weather, avalanche conditions, closures, and atypical operating conditions.
  • Collecting pertinent data including weather, snowpack, and avalanche observations.
  • Maintaining avalanche closures and signage.
  • Administrative and Reporting Responsibilities
    • Timely completion of documentation and record keeping of data- weather, avalanche control and observations and explosives use.
    • Assist with maintenance of all equipment that pertains to the avalanche control program. Timely and accurate reporting of documentation, and all incidents and deficiencies to appropriate departments/personnel.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of ski patrol and/or snow safety work experience.
  • Natural Resources Canada Explosives Regulatory Division Approval Letter.
  • AB Non-Mining Blaster's Permit - Avalanche Control (Recommended).
  • Canadian Avalanche Association Avalanche Operations Level 1 Certificate.
  • Medical experience in high stress situations - Advanced Wilderness First Aid/EMR or higher.
  • Excellent customer service skills, especially in high stress environments such as accident scenes.
  • Must be neat, alert, punctual and dependable, acting as a leader and mentor.
  • Prepared to work flexible schedules e.g., weekends, holidays, nights, extended hours.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Valid Alberta motor vehicle operator's license. Able to operate UTV, highway vehicle, snowmobile.
  • This position requires the ability to ski for long periods of time (spending the day in ski boots is normal), constant trunk rotation, frequent lifting, pushing/pulling of equipment, patients, and tools (up to 45 kg).
  • Requires working at heights, occasionally climbing ladders, ascending inclined slopes up to 100% (45°) There will be exposure to extreme environments (temperature and wind) and remote work.
  • This role will operate machinery and works around moving equipment. (Snowmobiles/Snowcats) Candidates are required to provide; Vibram® soled winter boots, ski equipment in good working order, avalanche safety gear (Digital 3 antennae transceiver, shovel, and probe), an ASTM helmet, and appropriate mid and base layers for a winter environment. Outer uniform pieces (liner, jacket, pants, toque) are provided
  • This position requires the ability to work around and travel in helicopters to perform certain tasks.
