Zurich Canada is currently seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to join our Middle Market team as an Assistant Manager. This role is an excellent development opportunity for a strong underwriter or similar role looking to take on management responsibilities. The Assistant Manager will support and guide P&C underwriters, ensuring underwriting excellence, fostering professional development, and driving business growth.

What you will do

Team Management

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to a team of underwriters, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Assist in the professional development of team members through coaching, training, and performance feedback.
  • Emulate managerial responsibilities, including participating in recruitment, conducting performance reviews, and addressing team issues.

Underwriting Excellence

  • Oversee and manage the underwriting process for middle market P&C accounts, ensuring adherence to company guidelines and risk appetite.
  • Review and approve underwriting decisions, providing guidance on complex and high-value accounts.
  • Underwrite and manage a book of key accounts for strategic brokers; as required in conjunction with coaching and leading a team for results.
  • Ensure the team maintains high standards of accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulatory and company policies.

Business Development

  • Collaborate with the sales and marketing team to develop and implement strategies for business growth.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities within the middle market segment.
  • Maintain and build strong relationships with brokers and customers to enhance business retention and growth.

Operational Efficiency

  • Monitor and analyze team performance metrics, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Ensure efficient workflow and resource allocation within the team.
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of underwriting tools, processes, and best practices.

Strategic Contribution

  • Participate in strategic planning and decision-making processes for the Middle Market P&C unit.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to senior management based on market trends, competitive analysis, and team performance.

Job Qualifications - What you bring to the table

Required:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.

OR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area

AND

  • 2 or more years of management experience

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Insurance, or a related field.
  • Minimum 8 years' experience underwriting within the P&C insurance industry.
  • Proven experience in middle market underwriting is highly preferred.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent skills in relationship building.
  • Proficiency in underwriting software platforms and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team.
  • Strong business acumen and understanding of the middle market segment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
