The Opportunity

Reporting to the Research Chair of the CERCUTS research group, the Project Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Research Chair, Operations Lead, and leading researchers with meeting project deliverables for applied research projects in topics including but not limited to, petroleum, water, and hydrogen instrumentation and analysis. These projects may include experiments associated with prototyping and their functional testing, bench and pilot scale operation and various chemical testing and instrumentation using standard methods, ASTM methods, EPA methods or equivalent, or new in-house methods. This may include industry quality or environmental and regulatory compliance testing as well. The candidate will be a key team member working towards the successful set up and implementation of applied research and technology development projects. The Project Coordinator continually interacts with internal and external stakeholders, i.e. researchers, industry partner representatives, technology providers, vendors, etc. to help ensure the timely achievement of project objectives in all stages of the project lifecycle.

Note: This is a Mitacs funding internship position for 12 months.

The Role

    • Active Project Coordination
    • Developing and operating bench or pilot prototypes, i.e. once through steam generators, hydrogen generators, battery prototypes, and high-pressure and temperature reactors, and processes.
    • Learning, setting up, and operating new equipment/instrument systems.
    • Ensuring projects adheres to provided timelines and deliverables
    • Communicating plans, actions, risks, and issues with key stakeholders and other project team members.
    • Solving any issues that may arise during the project in coordination with the Operations Lead and Research Chair
    • Managing and building relationships with multiple teams and research groups
    • Collaborate with schools/departments across SAIT on joint research opportunities.
    • Mentoring post-secondary students, trainees, and lab technologists
    • Leading method development and developing in-house methods with the input from principal investigators and research/laboratory technologists.
    • Engaging effectively in research outcome dissemination
    • Project Administration
    • Assisting the Principal Investigator/Project Manager with administrative functions including not limited to proposal writing, project reports, operational reports, and processes.
    • Ensuring research safe practices are followed by research technologists, including proper handling and disposal dangerous equipment, materials, or chemicals.
    • Ensuring accurate documentation is maintained throughout the length of the project, ie. Technical reports
    • Ensure proper equipment maintenance and upkeep is done, and the required supplies and equipment for various projects are sourced properly according to the project plan.

Qualifications

    • Master's degree awarded within the past two years, in chemical engineering or process engineering. (must comply with eligibility requirements for the Mitac Accelerate program: Supercharge Your Core Business with Mitacs Acceleration Program)
    • Understanding of processes and familiarity with engineering principles related to water analysis, water chemistry, process engineering, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics, with an emphasis on water treatment processes.
    • Degree, certificate or experience in data science/analysis, machine learning, and artificial intelligence is highly desirable.
    • Knowledge of theoretical and applied engineering calculations related to thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and high pressure and temperature processes.
    • Strong inter-personnel and communications skills are a must along with the ability to work independently or in a team setting and in collaboration with multidisciplinary partners from SAIT and Industry partners.
    • Experience managing complex projects and solving scientific problems in research environments.
    • WHMIS and H2S Alive desirable (additional training will be provided for candidates as required)

Skills Required

    • Strong writing and oral skills in English
    • Track record of publication and conference presentation
    • Must be proficient in standard computer software and Microsoft Office 365
    • Willing to travel for business and/or remote field work occasionally. Flexibility to do work shifts occasionally.
    • A solid work ethic, honesty, professionalism, and a willingness to adapt and meet deadlines within a changing environment is required as interactions will involve industry clients from various industrial sectors.
    • Strong time management, coordination, and organizational abilities to coordinate activities between multiple projects.
    • Alberta Class 5 driving license
