At the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, every member of our team makes a difference to conservation efforts locally and around the world with what they do every single day.
We're looking for a motivated Zoo Veterinary Intern to join our Animal Health team.
Position Key Accountabilities:
Under the direction of the zoo's veterinarians, the zoological medicine intern will be trained and participate in all aspects of zoological medicine during a one-year term position.
Contract Dates:
  • July 7, 2025 to July 12, 2026
What you will do:
  • Assists in the treatment and care of sick or injured animals. Participates in general medicine and surgery, anesthesia, emergency care, preventative health programs, nutrition, and pathology.
  • Ensures safe practices are carefully followed during veterinary observations, exams, and procedures, ensuring the safety of animals, staff, students, and the public continuously.
  • Frequent interactions with staff working on endangered species breeding for release and head-start programs, such as those for Vancouver Island Marmots, Greater Sage Grouse, Northern Leopard Frogs, Whooping Crane, and Burrowing Owl.
  • The intern may have the opportunity to participate in special projects associated with the field components of our conservation species reintroduction programs.
  • Assist in the training of senior veterinary students at the zoo.
  • Interaction with veterinarians and wildlife professionals from Parks Canada and various provincial and territorial governments.
  • Participate in veterinary projects, zoo intern rounds, and complete at least one scientific paper for publication.
  • Communicate well with visitors and other zoo staff.
  • Attend Animal Care branch meetings and other zoo meetings as assigned.
What you will bring:
  • Must possess a DVM (or equivalent) degree and be eligible for licensure in Alberta.
  • Class 5 Driver's License
  • Minimum one year of post-graduate clinical experience.
  • Previous zoological or wildlife experience is desirable, and a demonstrated interest in zoo and wildlife medicine is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Be flexible with working unusual hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Eligible to work in Canada.

Working Conditions:

  • Involves outdoor and indoor work, with occasional heavy lifting and long periods of standing
  • Must be able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull, bend, climb stairs and ladders, and carry up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
  • Exposure to various fauna and strong odours
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather
  • Significant computer work for medical and pathology records, reports, and correspondence
  • Shift work including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays will be required
  • On-call work is required (shared with veterinary team)

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
