Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is looking for a highly motivated person to fulfill a full-time (40h/week) Intern, Geotechnical position in Edmonton, AB from May - Aug 2025.

Job Summary

The Intern, Geotechnical is responsible for providing support to the Senior Manager, Geotechnical. The role is accountable for coordination and support of geotechnical projects including developing tender documents and supervising contractors and consultants on the project from initial conception to completion. Additionally, the position may require support for emergency response to service interruption linked with geohazards and coordinates service with internal departments and external engineering consultants, as well as financial budgetary control.

Major Responsibilities

  • Assist with the coordination of internal and external capital, special capital, and operating expenditure projects
  • Oversee construction activities in the field to ensure that work is being performed in accordance with CN standards
  • Audit active construction sites and validate that employees and contractors are observing safe and proper work practices and review new safety flashes with the team
  • Handle projects with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Contribute, present, and receive approval for the costing and estimates for projects
  • Handle internal stakeholders to ensure that projects meet requirements by using appropriate resources
  • Ensure that projects are completed within established timelines as defined with internal stakeholders
  • Create, follow, and adhere to estimates to be contained within budget envelopes
  • Collaborate with the internal Track, Bridges and Structures, Flagging, Signals and Communication, and all other internal teams to ensure that projects are meeting the established milestones

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, SharePoint)
  • Ability to work weekends and after-hours when necessary
  • Ability to travel for field inspections and maintenance programs
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress
  • Ability to work in potentially hazardous sites including inspections from helicopters, steep rock, and slippery soil slopes
  • Must be able to drive for extended periods of time
  • Ability to handle out of town work, roughly 50% of regular duty
  • Proficient in drafting and hand sketches to communicate solutions to engineering problems
  • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and database management*
  • Knowledge of geotechnical techniques and natural hazards*

Education

  • Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (minimum of 3 years completed) with a focus in Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering
  • Civil Engineering courses such as Geotechnical, Project Management, and Engineering Drafting
  • Valid Driver's License

*Any experience/education/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset
