Youth Worker - Practicum Opportunity


Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS) is currently seeking motived practicum students to join our programs department to provide support at the Youth Support Centre(YSC). This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in delivering high quality, trauma informed care while modelling appropriate social and professional behavior.

What We Do

YESS is a not-for-profit agency working with youth facing difficult realities. Based in Edmonton, our Youth Support Centre provides immediate and low-barrier 24/7 sleep support and individualized wrap-around supports for young people aged 15 -24.

We work collaboratively within a network of care focused on the prevention of youth homelessness by providing youth with the necessary supports to stabilize their housing, improve their wellbeing, build life skills, connect with community, and avoid re-entry into homelessness.


Hours: 8:00am-6:00pm or 12:00pm-10:00pm


Responsibilities Includes:

  • Assisting with intake and crisis diversion.
  • Establish a caring attitude in the youth's life by listening to their thoughts, concerns and problems.
  • Provide consistent emotional support through empathy.
  • Maintain a calm, consistent and emotionally balanced environment for youth, yourself, and coworkers.
  • Manage youth access to services: meals, showers, laundry, donations etc.
  • Work with youths to achieve their goals and transition out of homelessness.
  • Manage behaviour appropriately, according to program expectations and the youth's developmental stage.
  • Performing clerical duties to maintain youth support, youth goal setting and team communication.
  • Other duties as assigned

Who you are

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program or a recent graduate in Social Work, Child and Youth Care or a related Human Services field.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • A passion for working with children and youths, especially those experiencing crisis
  • Experience working or volunteering with youth is an asset
  • Knowledge of the values, beliefs, and practices of Aboriginal and other cultural and diverse groups.
