ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta's Sheerness Generating Station in Hanna, Alberta is seeking to fill four (4), full-time, temporary Steam Plant Operator I positions. Reporting to the Shift Supervisor, employees will assist with the safe operation of the plant including checking the operation, performance and condition of plant equipment and processes, including assigned maintenance and cleanup duties.

This is a safety-sensitive position. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing.

This position is administered under the CEWA Job Posting provisions.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Under the direct supervision of the Shift Supervisor and/or direction of a more senior operator, employees perform entry level duties. Typical duties may include but are not limited to assisting other operators with:

  • Performing inspection trips throughout the plant to ensure safe and efficient operation by conducting routine equipment checks (daily, weekly and monthly) as required and include checking oil levels, temperature on bearing and gear cases of plant equipment
  • Performing cleaning duties as required or assigned
  • Conducting boiler water tests reporting abnormal values and re-test after corrective action have been taken and ensure all values and actions are recorded on the daily log sheets
  • Monitoring process conditions and equipment to ensure compliance with station approvals and report/document any violations to senior staff
  • Isolating equipment and assisting with the preparation of permits, identifying hazards, completing/documenting hazard assessment for activities undertaken
  • Performing minor maintenance duties as assigned and working with the maintenance department as required
  • Participating in all training activities with successful completion in a timely manner demonstrating required competency level as required.
  • Adhering to safe work practices and supporting/participating in the emergency response activities at the station
  • Providing support and assistance to new/junior operators

All duties and responsibilities will be performed in accordance with established health, safety and environmental principles, corporate policies, practices and procedures and applicable government legislation.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience:

  • Completion of Grade XII, including a pass standing in Math 20, Physics 20 (preference toward Physics 30), English 30 and another 30-level course with two (2) years of related experience, OR
  • Completion of one year of a two-year Power Engineering Technology Program with six (6) months of related experience AND
  • A valid 4th Class Power Engineer's Certificate of Competency
  • Must have a valid Alberta operators license (minimum class 5)
