Job Description

The Lake Louise Ski Resort (LLSR) is seeking individuals to be a part of the Environmental Projects, Reclamation and & Labour Team.

Reporting to the Environmental Department, the successful candidate will be a self-motivated individual. They will play an integral part in LLSR's commitment to sustainable recreation by aiding in numerous environmental projects and initiatives. The ideal candidate will be adaptable, excited to work on a wide variety of projects, have an excellent level of physical fitness, and enjoy working outdoors. The successful candidate will focus primarily on reclamation and revegetation and various labour tasks.

The applicant should expect to work outdoors daily (regardless of weather conditions). Office work will be limited to morning check-in and end-of-day reports.

Reclamation involves working on LLSR construction and development projects, monitoring previously disturbed sites, erosion control, and managing invasive vegetation. Specific tasks include:

  • Manually transporting, spreading, and calculating controlled amounts of seed and fertilizer at project sites,
  • Raking and cultivating,
  • Pulling and disposal of weeds,
  • Installing various ESC materials such as geotextiles, berms, and silt fences,
  • Manual maintenance and installation of drainage features (ditches, waterbars) through hand-digging, and rock moving and lining,
  • Carrying required project supplies to and from sites,
  • Landscaping.

Environmental project and reclamation tasks include a variety of physical work tasks. Additionally, the environmental team routinely helps all LLSR departments with labour as needed at project sites. Examples of tasks may include:

  • Digging snow for the bear fence installation and assisting the summer Trail Crew Team,
  • Working in various construction settings, working around machinery and equipment, using hand tools, and working with contractors,
  • Providing assistance to the Long-Range Plan (LRP) and Operations Department as needed (i.e. traffic control, machine operator assistant),
  • Documenting construction and project sites through different stages of progress,
  • Working in conjunction with all departments in managing winter waste accumulation on the ski hill.

A variety of environmental projects take place annually in conjunction with construction and development projects. Environmental work may include:

  • Assisting in spill clean-up and response,
  • Surveying and translocating small mammals,
  • Whitebark Pine conservation,
  • Environmental surveys and monitoring (i.e. bird, rare plant, waterbodies),
  • Vegetation management (limbing, brushing, pruning),
  • Assisting with the maintenance of remote wildlife cameras,
  • Environmental clean-up including construction waste, general waste, or woody debris,
  • Providing environmental communication and support to LLSR staff with fuel handling, species at risk, wildlife issues and waste management,
  • Working with ski area staff to maintain and improve relations with the community, Parks Canada, environmental groups and the public.

Many of the abovementioned tasks take place on steep slopes and in areas with no vehicle access within the Lake Louise Ski Area and on its surrounding slopes. A strong level of fitness, in addition to confidence and enthusiasm for off-trail hiking, is necessary for all applicants of this position.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's license (or equivalent) with clean driving record strongly encouraged and considered an asset, see Driving Requirements below
  • A positive attitude and pleasant personality with good communication skills, combined with the ability and willingness to enforce procedures in a professional manner
  • Minimum high school graduation; post-secondary education or interest in an environmental field will be considered an asset,
  • Environmental related education, work experience, or interest in the environmental field will be considered an asset,
  • Enjoy working outdoors daily in all weather conditions,
  • Willingness to hike to remote work locations on a daily basis,
  • Self-motivated and goal oriented, must be capable of working with a team as well as independently with minimal supervision,
  • Physically fit; capable of lifting and carrying 25-60lbs,
  • Experience working in outdoor environments and local knowledge of the area and/or resort an asset,
  • Valid First Aid certificate of any level an asset,
  • A police background check, from your home country or province, will be required upon commencement of employment,
  • A three-month probationary period applies.

Driving Requirements: The successful candidate is strongly encouraged to have one of the following to be on the LLSA driving list:

  • An Alberta driver's license that has been held for more than three years or;
  • A driver's license issued by a Canadian province outside of Alberta with a driver's abstract proving three years driving experience and/or a 3 Year Claims Experience Letter provided by the applicant's insurance company, or;
  • An internationally-issued license with a 3 Year Claims Experience Letter provided by the applicant's insurance company

Work Schedule: During the summer construction season, labourers will be expected to work 4 x 10-hour days a week. Schedules may vary throughout the contract.

Dress Code: Outdoor uniform with appropriate outdoor footwear - discussed at time of interview
