We are currently looking for individuals interested in working casual in Operating Room at Abbotsford Regional Hospital & Cancer Centre, located in Abbotsford BC.

Detailed Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, the Registered Nurse (RN), O.R. provides direct nursing care to patients within the Operating Room (OR) according to established standards and administrative policies and procedures. Assesses patients physical and psycho-social needs; identifies problems, plans, implements, documents, evaluates and coordinates the nursing care of assigned patients and performs scrubbing and circulating duties.


Responsibilities

  1. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care of patients. Identifies actual or potential problems, plans interventions, performs planned interventions and evaluates outcomes.
  2. Receives and admits patients to the OR. Coordinates and provides nursing care to patients according to physician and anaesthetist orders and in conformance with established standards and hospital policies. Sets priorities, assigns and delegates tasks to appropriate staff
  3. Participates in identifying and reducing risk factors that may impact the patient and/or health care team. Acts as an advocate to protect and promote the patient's right to autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity and access to information.
  4. Modifies care as needs change. Initiates immediate treatment, such as applying non-invasive monitoring devices if required.
  5. Obtains, checks, sets up and positions supplies, instruments and equipment required for surgery ensuring that instruments and equipment are in working order. Reports instruments/equipment in need of repair.
  6. Follows standardized count policy and provides appropriate documentation.
  7. Performs scrub and circulation duties within the OR according to prescribed procedures and protocols.
  8. Collects information from a variety of sources using skills of observation, communication and physical assessment to enable the provision of appropriate nursing care.
  9. Participates in quality improvement activities and research by identifying patient care issues and collecting data.
  10. Participates as an active member on nursing and hospital committees and councils for improvement of patient care and/or work environment.
  11. Participates in the orientation and ongoing education of nursing staff and students by providing information and acting as a preceptor and mentor as appropriate.
  12. Participates in the evaluation of patient care programs, techniques, standards and procedures by providing feedback about effectiveness and patient care outcomes.
  13. Maintains a safe environment for patients, families and staff by adhering to established safety and emergency practices and procedures.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduation from an approved School of Nursing. Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).

One (1) year's recent relevant clinical nursing experience in the designated clinical area, and completion of post graduate course work and/or certification applicable to the designated clinical area, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Clinical proficiency in the designated clinical area.
  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessment (clinical and diagnostic reasoning) and provide nursing care through appropriate / prescribed technical, therapeutic, and safety interventions.
  • Ability to determine and deal with emergency situations.
  • Ability to recognize acuity changes.
  • Ability to use factual information, prior learning and basic principles and procedures to support nursing decisions and actions with relevant research-based evidence / evidence-informed practice.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families/care givers, the public, medical staff and members of the interprofessional care team using verbal, written and electronic applications.
  • Ability to promote person-centered care that demonstrates empathy for patients and families/care givers, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, and patient advocacy.
  • Ability to integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to problem-solve effectively.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to collaborate with and promote cooperation among members of the interprofessional care team.
  • Ability to operate related equipment including relevant computer applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
