About the role

Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.

We are looking for multiple Operators to join the BC Works team in temporary roles to support our upcoming needs in Q1 2025. As an Operator, you'll play a critical role across the site, from monitoring control room systems to performing hands-on tasks and operating machinery essential to our production. Success in this role relies on your commitment to safety, adaptability to changing priorities, and skill in working collaboratively with your team.

This role is a great opportunity for enthusiastic and safety-oriented individuals to advance their careers in a large-scale industrial setting.

Note on Employment Status and Opportunities:

  • Starting as a Temporary Employee: All Operators initially join as temporary employees, with schedules determined by operational needs. This role is designed as a pathway toward permanent employment, a process that typically takes around two years and follows an internal, seniority-based progression system.
  • While no hours are guaranteed, our team strives to effectively plan workforce needs to provide consistent opportunities.
  • Red Seal Tradespersons: If you are hired as a Temporary Operator and hold a Red Seal trade qualification, you may be eligible for temporary or permanent assignments in trade roles across the site as needs arise.

In addition to paying competitively and providing great benefits packages, we want you to live the lifestyle that is right for you and your family. And because of our size and scale, there are many opportunities to learn, grow and do more than you ever thought possible. Every hour of every shift, your safety and wellbeing is our number one priority. We do the work only if it is safe, and we invest to make sure every member of the team has the quality tools they need to do their job.

Reporting to the Operations Supervisor and working within our smelter Operations & Services teams, you will be:

  • Commit to safety and Rio Tinto's core values by adhering to safety protocols and consistently practicing the company's Code of Conduct.
  • Maintaining a safe, clean, and well-kept work area, addressing any hazards immediately.
  • Performing labour tasks and operate equipment safely, following Standard Operating Procedures to meet production goals.
  • Report safety issues, incidents, and equipment problems to supervisors right away.
  • Provide helpful feedback to supervisors on equipment performance to support improvements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by suggesting and implementing solutions.
  • Work effectively with team members, showing respect and clear communication.

What you'll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
    • If a high school diploma is not held, please note that basic certificate programs do not meet this requirement.
  • A minimum of a Class 7 (Novice) driver's license or a more advanced class license is required.
  • At least one year of experience in an industrial, manufacturing, construction, or related environment
  • Flexibility to work rotating 12-hour shifts, including days, nights, and weekends, and to adapt to changing schedules as needed
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels
  • Commitment to Rio Tinto's core values: Care, Curiosity, and Courage

Please note: Fly-in-fly-out arrangements are not available. Join our team and become an integral part of our vibrant community.
