Detailed Overview

In accordance with pulmonary lab accreditation requirements and in conjunction with the interprofessional health care team, provides Respiratory Therapy services to outpatients referred to the respiratory clinics and performs inpatient and outpatient pulmonary diagnostic procedures.


Responsibilities

  1. Performs pulmonary function procedures such as spirometry, lung volume determination, diffusion capacity, inhalation challenges, arterial blood punctures, oximetry with exercise, overnight oximetry, cardiopulmonary stress tests, FeNo, sputum inductions and home oxygen assessments.
  2. Completes and maintains testing documents and records.
  3. Provides respiratory therapy services to the outpatient respiratory clinics by teaching patients and families, in individual and group settings, about pulmonary function, medication and monitoring techniques, exercise routines, and coping skills that will help patients living with chronic respiratory disease.
  4. Performs tests such as chest ausculation and physical assessments.
  5. Coordinates and conducts exercises with the patient(s) that will help improve exercise tolerance and that are consistent with the patient's care plan.
  6. Monitors pulmonary function equipment ensuring calibration and quality checks are performed, arranging for maintenance and repair as required.
  7. Supports outpatient respiratory services by participating in selected respiratory research activities, providing input into the evaluation of new equipment, providing input into new procedures and techniques for how patients can learn effective self-management of chronic respiratory disease, and providing input into the selection of new employees as requested.
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program. Successful completion of the Canadian Board of Respiratory Care credentialing exam.

One year recent, related Respiratory Therapy experience in a clinic and diagnostic setting or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Eligible for membership with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) and British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT).

Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C.



Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of Respiratory Therapy, including pulmonary function procedures, diagnostic testing and patient teaching.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and families in individual and group settings.
  • Ability to organize workload.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to operate and maintain related respiratory equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform required duties.
