Job Summary | Reporting to the Senior Laboratory Technician, the Laboratory Technician performs duties relevant to the discipline area in the preparation, maintenance and safety of the student laboratory. |
Specific Duties | Prepare and setup materials and equipment in advance of scheduled labs and attach appropriate safety compliant labels on secondary containers • Setup, cleanup, takedown and replenish lab supplies and equipment, including student workstations, as per schedules and requirements • Monitor and maintain WHMIS/GHS compliance, including labelling of secondary containers • Aid in the ordering, receipt, preparation, maintenance, inventory, and storage of supplies, specimen and field collection(s), materials, and equipment • Provide supervisory support to the laboratory instructor as needed and as it pertains to student safety and use of materials and equipment • Provide technical support in the development of laboratory procedures • Aid in preparation of displays to promote the department • Assist with equipment sign out/in and act as a contact to provide information and assistance, as required • Facilitate transportation needs to field sites, as needed • Liaise with all campuses and internal departments e.g. Facilities, Purchasing as well as outside agencies, as needed. • Other related duties as assigned by Senior Laboratory Technician and/or Supervisor. • You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners and communities. • You will promote a positive work atmosphere and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues. |
Skills & Qualifications | • Bachelor's degree (or higher) specializing in Natural Resources or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience. • 1 year or more Previous experience in providing support in a student laboratory setting. • Minimum Level 2 occupational first aid with transportation endorsement required • Class 2 or higher driver's license required • Ability to work independently and unsupervised in resolving problems and decision making • Ability to organize time and workload • Ability to work against multiple time constraints and deadlines • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills • Ability to multi-task • Ability to work effectively and safely in a potentially hazardous work environment • Mechanical and technical proficiency, experience with the use of hand power tools • Experience driving on radio controlled roads, off-road conditions and under adverse weather conditions • Physical ability to complete demands of the job |
