Detailed Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Clinical Services, the Maternity Unit Aide transports mothers and mothers-to-be within the Unit; sets up delivery tables; collects used instruments and equipment; cleans and reassembles equipment and prepares the room ready for the next case. In addition, the Maternity Unit Aide maintains stock supplies and assembles patient charts in accordance with established procedures.
Responsibilities
- Transports mothers and mothers-to-be within the Unit utilizing wheelchairs and/or stretchers.
- Identifies equipment required and sets up sterile delivery tables using sterile techniques.
- Collects used instruments, counts against the standard and returns instruments to the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) for reprocessing. Returns used equipment to SPD for cleaning and sterilization.
- Prepares the room ready for the next case by restocking with supplies and equipment.
- Cleans and reassembles equipment such as suction machines, tourniquet cuffs and infant warmers, in accordance with established procedures.
- Cleans, reassembles and performs quality assurance checks on infant resuscitation units by re-assembling oxygen and suction equipment and ensuring its functionality.
- Checks oxygen therapy supplies, entonox delivery system and replaces filters.
- Reports malfunctioning equipment to the Manager or designate. Maintains a log of equipment sent for bio-medical repairs and follows up to ensure repaired equipment is returned to service.
- Checks drawers, cupboards and patient rooms to ensure appropriate supplies are available; restocks where necessary.
- Maintains and stocks unit supply of sterile/unsterile supplies and equipment according to established quotas. Checks and puts away supplies and equipment received from SPD and other departments. Rotates stock and returns outdates to SPD for reprocessing according to established procedures.
- Maintains and rotates stock of IV solutions, supplies and equipment related to oxygen therapy, and non-control medications; returns outdates to appropriate department according to established procedures.
- Maintains stocks of stationary supplies and assembles patient charts according to established procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Grade 10, plus 1 year's recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
