Detailed Overview
The Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR) is responsible for the collection, compilation, documentation and submission of reliable data to the NSQIP database of eligible surgeries of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP). This is accomplished through high-quality clinical patient screening utilizing NSQIP criteria/protocols, data compilation, primary data interpretation, documentation and entry into the ACS NSQIP database of all eligible surgeries for designated sites. The SCR works closely with members of Surgical Services to identify opportunities for surgical clinical quality improvement and presents findings, interpretation outcomes and recommendations for surgical quality improvement. Represents the ACS NSQIP on administrative internal/external committees; liaises with provincial, national and international health care agencies as appropriate. .
Responsibilities
- In collaboration with Manager and Site Surgical Leadership teams, provides consultation, guidance and support in the use of tools and mechanisms to measure, monitor and evaluate quality improvement initiatives.
- Provides facilitation, coaching and support in the development, monitoring and analysis of key performance indicators for quality improvement activities.
- Abstracts patient care data, reviews data and data sets for accuracy; conducts statistical analysis and classifies data according to clinical presentation, trending patterns and identification of process or quality improvement opportunities.
- Collects, compiles, documents and enters data to NSQIP database of eligible surgeries. In collaboration with the manager, ensures caseload accrual requirement established by NSQIP are met yearly.
- Screens and identifies surgical patients for inclusion in ACS NSQIP through the application of NSQIP program criteria and protocols. Reports potential or actual risks to client outcomes and/or the organization to the Manager for follow-up.
- Identifies streamlining and process improvement in the data collection process. Assesses its efficiency on a regular basis and provides input regarding redesigning the collection methodology as needed.
- Formulates and reviews weekly site accrual reports on the website and responds to accrual report alerts. Notifies Manager of reports & alerts; disseminates this information to the Manager and NSQIP.
- Attends and participates in NSQIP medical rounds, NSQIP conference calls and department meetings to ensure reliable data collection of postoperative occurrences and to facilitate knowledge transfer and dissemination of information to the interdisciplinary team (s) gained through the project.
- Participates in and contributes to ongoing physician learning of NSQIP definitions and standards.
- Establishes effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in Surgical Services, Medicine, Nursing, whose support is necessary for the management and success of the program. Participates in regular meetings and committees with Manager and other partners to perform required duties.
- Attends international conferences pertaining to the program as requested.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) plus two (2) years' experience in an acute care environment in surgical nursing, supplemented by additional training/education in statistical analysis, quality improvement methodologies and patient safety; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in chart review and data extraction.
- Demonstrated knowledge of quality improvement principles, methods and tools.
- Knowledge of statistics, data base methodologies and data sets, supplemented by demonstrated analytical/evaluative skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with others, both internally and externally.
- Demonstrated presentation, facilitation and teaching skills.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work.
- Ability to work interdependently and /or with teams.
- Proficiency in computer software such as Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint.
- Ability to communicate and interact with members of the surgical team, administration, patients and ACS NSQIP members effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
