Salary Range : $142,000 - $178,500 annually (Vancouver only)

The offered salary may vary based on the candidate's job-specific knowledge, skills, and experience.


This position is based out of Vancouver or Calgary. McCarthy Tétrault employees benefit from a hybrid work environment.


As a Director, Professional Resources (PRD), you will be:

Student Portfolio

  • Overseeing the summer and articling student programs including recruitment, summer and articling student orientations, performance evaluations, hire-back placements, budgets, and educational programs.

  • Liaising with the Clients and Markets Team to develop and maintain the Firm's student recruitment website and other promotional materials.

  • Working with the national team to develop and implement national student program policies including office exchanges, secondments, funding of national moots and other activities.

  • Supporting national initiatives as requested by the Chief Professional Resources Officer (CPRO).

  • Acting as the principal contact for the firm to the relevant Law Society and law schools, including funding/gifting, participating in career days and guest panel appearances, and overseeing all expenditures/activities sponsored by the firm.

Junior Associate Portfolio

  • Onboarding & integration.

  • Performance management, work allocation & progression.

  • Mentor selection, training and support, and coaching referrals (internal and external).

  • Wellness and engagement initiatives.

  • Management of departures, leaves, inter-office assignments, flex-time arrangements, and on-track/off-track role transitions.

  • Compensation and preparing/managing regional program budget.

  • Promoting Junior Associate compliance with Firm policies.

  • Collaborating with other members of the PR team, Firm leaders, and the Inclusion Now office to deliver market-leading student and Junior Associate programs.

  • Attending meetings of external professional development groups.

  • Collaborating with Chief Professional Resources Officer, Senior Professional Resources Directors, and other PRDs on national and regional PR projects and initiatives, as well as the Educations Team on delivery of education programs.

  • Managing direct reports.

As our ideal candidate, you will distinguish yourself by the following profile:

  • Minimum of three years of legal practice experience, ideally in a large firm environment.
  • Some experience in recruitment, mentoring and firm management activities.
  • Excellent organizational, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional client service skills.
  • Must be flexible (open to new ideas, frequent change in priorities, etc.).
  • Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgement.
  • Ability to handle an extensive workload with competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent managerial skills, as well as diplomacy.
  • Capacity to handle high pressure situations and tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
