Job Summary

A part time research is needed to support research activities for the Division of Community Internal Medicine. Research will focus on rural health equity and rural research capacity building. The research assistant will support all Division research activities.


Organizational Status
This position reports to the Division Head of Community Internal Medicine.

Work Performed

· Oversees and coordinates developing program of research

o Facilitates community and stakeholder engagement meetings to coordinate the development of new research programs

· Works closely with East Kootenay Regional Hospital clinical research coordinator to develop clinical research capacity at a new research program;

· Supervises and provides research methods training to UBC medical students and residents;

· Supports research ethics applications (submitting and tracking applications; responding to provisos; advising faculty), data collection, data analysis and knowledge translation;

· Works with Division faculty members to develop research protocols and grant funding applications;

o Provides feedback to division faculty members on research protocols and grant funding applications, aligning them with faculty research interests

· Builds cultural safety principles into research activities;

o Collaborates on community engagement protocols and provides advice on how to apply practices into recatch

· Initiates and adapts procedures to meet unusual situations and participates in making decisions concerning the planning, organization and requirements of the research activities of the Division.



Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Research Assistant is responsible for exercising professional judgment to support the overall coordination and management of Research in the Division. This position is expected to exercise a high level of accountability and judgment. Requires a high level of organizational skills to fulfill responsibilities, to balance priorities, and ensure workflow. Communications are sensitive and confidential, and demand excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and absolute integrity. Poor decisions about policy and a failure to get the work done in a timely and effective manner would damage the credibility of the academic unit and to a misuse of resources.

Supervision Received
Works independently under faculty direction.

Supervision Given
Allocates, supervises and coordinates the work of up to four research team members with varying levels of expertise and has input into staff selection and evaluation; assists and advises faculty members on research protocol development and grant applications.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Grant writing experience essential. Proven mastery of English grammar, punctuation and matters of Tri-Council writing style is essential. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to deconstruct program guidelines and break them down into clear descriptions of actions and essential steps for new faculty. Ability to liaise with the funding agencies and gather further program information. Ability to exercise tact and discretion. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships with groups and individuals such as senior level academics, researchers, government agencies and UBC administration, is essential. Ability to analyze and interpret data, determine implications, and provide recommendations. Ability to exercise sound judgment. Ability to make thoughtful, informed, and thorough decisions. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and to summarize relevant information in clear and succinct English. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to read difficult or complicated text analytically and critically. Ability to understand and apply policies, procedures, and instructions. Knowledge of conflict of interest and conflict of commitment is an asset.
