Job Summary
To evaluate and execute recruitment strategies and advising services for all secondary and post-secondary school students, parents and counselors in Canada for the purpose of encouraging qualified prospective students to seek admission to UBC. Specifically responsible for researching and developing strategies to attract students who self-identify as Black Canadian to consider UBC and to work with the broader recruiter-advisor team with regards to implementation. Advise students with secondary and post-secondary credentials concerning University admission criteria and specific program requirements for admission to UBC undergraduate programs on both campuses. This position is located on our Vancouver campus and works in close collaboration with Okanagan campus colleagues and the Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program staff on each campus.

Organizational Status
The Recruiter-Advisor reports to the Associate Director, Student Recruitment & Advising (SRA). The position works closely in collaboration with: (a) Colleagues in Student Recruitment and Advising (b) other staff in Enrolment Services and Student Services, (c) The Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program staff on both campuses (d) other faculty-based Advisors, (e) the UBC Black Caucus and (f) other units on the two campuses to support the recruitment, advising, admission, and transition to UBC. This position will be required to travel throughout BC and other Canadian provinces and territories.

Work Performed

1. In consultation with the Director and Associate Director, develops and executes a recruitment strategy in support of the university's enrolment goals for our Vancouver and Okanagan campuses. The position focuses on prospective students who self-identify as Black Canadian and researching the current barriers that this group of students encounters and opportunities to increase enrollment of Black students at UBC.

2. Reviews pre-enrolment data and recruitment activities from prior years and makes recommendations to the entire SRA team, for future activities focused on outreach geared at prospective Black Canadian students. Works with the Black Caucus to expand current list and connections with Black youth serving organizations across the country and develop recommendations for the university experience of Black students in post-secondary and at UBC.

3. Work collaboratively in identifying issues and developing strategies to encourage Black Canadian students to access post-secondary education at one of our two UBC campuses. Includes researching issues and barriers related to the recruitment and retention of Black undergraduate students and building relationships with existing and new schools, organizations and affiliated communities.

4. Represent UBC accurately, dynamically, and strategically to prospective high school and transfer students, parents, counselors, and external communities and organizations who work with Black youth. Communicates information to a broad audience regarding the mission and vision of UBC, admissibility to academic programs, financial support and scholarships, residence and other services which act as major factors in the choice of post-secondary institutions.

5. Liaise with key staff, faculty and groups (i.e. Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program; Undergraduate Admissions Office; the Black Caucus; Advisors within the faculties) and lead in the implementation of recruitment strategies and programs for prospective Black Canadian students.

6. Collaborate with colleagues in Enrolment Services, Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program, Equity and Inclusion Office and the Centre for Teaching and Learning Technology to develop and implement professional development and training opportunities for the Student Recruitment and Advising team so that all team members have the understanding, skills, and capabilities to recruit IBPOC students.

7. Direct responsibility in planning and coordinating off campus recruitment trips throughout BC and Canada. Planning includes data analysis, researching issues and coordination of logistics. Events include secondary school visits, post-secondary visits, participation in select education fairs, recruitment events open to the public, sessions within community organizations and other events as required.

8. Advises prospective students on all aspects of academic program options, application, admission, registration, housing, awards and financial assistance, extracurricular activities, and orientation to UBC. Advising through one-on-one appointments, telephone, e-mail and web-based correspondence with students, their families and guidance counselors and college advisors. Provides follow-up for self-identified Black Canadian applicants throughout the admission cycle.

9. Prepares and delivers effective presentations to groups large and small, using multimedia materials and other collateral. Focuses on key messages for the audience and adapts to settings on and off campus. Plans and delivers effective group advising sessions for Black Canadian student visits and events as well as mixed audiences and post-secondary students. Conducts appropriate follow up for visits and events with students, parents and counselors in presentation settings, one-on-one interviews, telephone inquiries, and e-mail correspondence.

10. Applies in-depth knowledge and understanding of complex admission requirements and admission policies in responding appropriately to inquiries. Provides students seeking admission to the University with appropriate advice on their admissibility to their choice of program and campus, based on the student's current level of schooling and course work. Seeks advice and consults with Undergraduate Admission as needed. Applies tact, cultural sensitivity and discretion when advising students who do not currently meet regular admission criteria and offers advice on the various admission pathways that will help students transition to UBC.

11. Participates in webinars and other types of virtual meetings and social media environments to engage with prospective Black Canadian students, applicants and newly admitted students to encourage their interest in UBC.

12. Responsible for the development and delivery of yield and welcome/ transition events for admitted students. Coordinates activities with other Enrolment Services, Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program and Student Development partners, faculty and other campus units. Planning is focused on supporting students throughout the admission, registration, and transition process. Includes budget management, program / service design and delivery, promotion, logistics, and post-program evaluation.

13. Provides input and feedback in the development and delivery of promotional print and multimedia materials used for recruitment and advising purposes. Identify key messages or approaches that would be most salient for Black Canadian student audiences.

14. Utilizes the Student Information System, Client Relationship Management system (currently UNI), and other data management systems to obtain information on the status of a student's inquiry or application for advising purposes. Works proficiently with CRM to plan school visits, record data obtained from schools, run reports and communicate with prospects and applicants. Prepares targeted communications through the CRM to proactively communicate with students who have self-identified as Black Canadian students to build relationships and encourage interest in UBC.

15. Works with the Undergraduate Admissions, Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program and Equity and Inclusion units to review the personal profile unconscious bias training and make recommendations for anti-racism, anti-black racism and the historical impact of slavery and colonization on historically marginalized groups.

16. May participate in the hiring, training and supervision of student staff.

17. Undertakes other student recruitment and advising activities as required, in keeping with the terms of the position.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Our goal is to support and enhance the participation and success of students who self-identify as Indigenous, Black and Persons of Colour at our two UBC campuses. Ineffective work will result in the failure of the University to meet goals set out in the University Strategic Plan (Shaping UBC's Next Century), the Inclusion Action Plan, the Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program and the Student Recruitment and Advising Strategic Plan. Ineffective work could damage the relations of UBC with some IBPOC communities or organizations.

Supervision Received
Work independently but in close consultation with the Director and Associate Director, Student Recruitment and Advising. Work closely and cooperatively with other Student Recruiter-Advisors as well as other staff in the Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program and the Black Caucus at the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses and within the University to meet the goals and objectives of the unit. Exercise initiative, diplomacy, tact, resourcefulness and sound judgment when representing the University, particularly in settings that are distant from UBC. Must exercise cross-cultural sensitivity and intercultural skills when advising prospective students with different cultural backgrounds. Must employ tact and diplomacy in interactions with prospective students and parents, with counselors and institutional representatives as well as faculty and staff at UBC.

Supervision Given
Participates in the hiring, training and supervising of student staff as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four to five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Four years full-time experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a post-secondary institution, preferably in a role specific to increasing accessibility of education amongst students from historically, persistently, or systemically marginalized communities. Awareness of the historical impact of slavery, colonization and race-based discrimination, combined with a strong commitment to advancing the educational aspirations of Black Canadians. Must have a deep understanding of Black student experiences, particularly as they relate to post-secondary education, and an appreciation of the complexity and range of Black people and communities within the context of Canada. A sound knowledge of University admission criteria, services and resources for undergraduate students. Experience in public relations, student advising, and special event program planning. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally, in writing and in significant public speaking roles. Excellent interpersonal and diplomacy skills as well as strong intercultural skills. Excellent leadership and organizational skills. Experience using system-wide information systems, and a variety of word processing, database and presentation software applications. Must hold a valid BC driver's license and have access to a vehicle. Must be willing to travel extensively within Canada. Open to working evenings and weekends.
