The Opportunity: McElhanney has an exciting opportunity for a Civil Inspector / Contract Administrator to join our Municipal and Land Development team in Victoria, BC. In this role, you will be a key player in helping us expand our construction services for existing and prospective clients. What You’ll Be Doing:
Provide on-site contractor inspection to monitor the quality and progress of the work being performed
Provide inspection and contract administration duties as defined by MMCD
Chair regular site meetings, prepare meeting agendas and record and distribute meeting minutes.
track and report contractor schedule milestones progress
Review and respond to any requested changes or RFI's during construction that may affect cost and schedule, and recommend and issue Contemplated Change Notices (“CCN”) and Change Orders (“CO”) where appropriate and in MMCD format
Track and report site instructions, change orders and force account work; ensure necessary approvals are obtained
Prepare a deficiency list and schedule for completion Issue substantial and total completion, when appropriate, and Complete Warranty closeout review and documentation.
Author daily inspection reports
Be forward thinking; understand the construction progress and be able to learn the specifications and requirements of the work which they will be inspecting
Understand the hazards and safe work procedures for each task and inspection location
Report inspection issues to the Project Manager
Maintain inventories of bid item quantities and generate payment authorizations
Provide reporting of work progress and issue construction memos to contractor as needed
Provide mentorship and guidance to entry level staff and oversee material testing and surveying operations
Identify field and design issues, facilitate corrective measures, and perform constructability reviews
Liaise with contractor, client, and affected stakeholders during construction operations
Lead or assist in the development of construction specifications and contract tender documents
What You’ll Bring:
Ideally 5+ years of field or construction related experience as contract administrator /inspector
BONUS – Hold an MMCD Contract Administration Certificate
Post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant field
Ability to work standard 40-hour work week
Willingness to commit to construction projects for the duration of the project
Experience with municipal and land development construction projects; consulting experience an asset
Ability to interpret construction, contracts, drawings, and specifications and compare them with construction in progress, detecting faulty materials and workmanship, and suggesting appropriate remedies
Have a forward-looking approach and the ability to foresee potential issues and problems so these items can be addressed and resolved
Exceptional organization and follow-up skills; ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
