Description

The Food Services Manager oversees all aspects of food service operations at the ARC, ensuring compliance with the Canada Food Guide and all applicable health regulations. This role is responsible for maintaining high standards in meal planning, preparation, and service while supporting the mission and strategic objectives of the organization.

HOURS: 37.5 hours per week; TBD by supervisor and candidate

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Regulatory Compliance & Standards

  • Ensures the ARC's food service prepares delicious food that meets the dietary requirements outlined in the Canada Food Guide.
  • Adheres to all relevant health regulations, safety standards, and food handling protocols.
  • Implement policies and procedures to maintain compliance with sanitation, food safety, and workplace safety standards.
  • Maintains cleanliness and upkeep of kitchen, dining, and food storage areas to comply with provincial health legislation and Vancouver Island Health Authority health standards.

Menu Planning & Meal Preparation

  • Works with the Cooks and Kitchen Helpers to develop appetizing, varied, and nutritionally balanced menus.
  • Ensures special dietary needs of residents are met.
  • Supervises and participates in meal preparation as needed.

Staffing & Supervision

  • In collaboration with the Operations Manager, hires, trains, and supervises the Food Service team. This includes Cooks, Kitchen Helpers, volunteers, and residents assigned to the kitchen via. programming.
  • Develops and maintains staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage for all food service operations.
  • Adjusts schedules as needed to accommodate operational demands, staff availability, and special events.
  • Tracks staff attendance, time off, and shift changes to ensure compliance with employment policies.
  • Oversees and coordinates volunteers assigned to the department.

Financial Management & Resource Allocation

  • In collaboration with the Operations Manager, monitors the Food Services departmental budget to ensure financial responsibility and good stewardship of resources.
  • Monitors food and kitchen supply expenses, optimizing the use of resources, including donations, to minimize waste.
  • Responsible for ordering food and kitchen supplies; monitoring inventory and planning for ARC events.
  • Oversees and processes employee payroll, ensuring accuracy in hours worked, overtime, and deductions.
  • Ensures payroll records are maintained and submitted in accordance with organizational policies and deadlines.

Operational Efficiency & Quality Control

  • Adapts work practices to ensure efficient food service delivery.
  • Implements quality control measures across all aspects of food services.
  • Reports maintenance issues to the Operations Manager.
  • Manages and optimizes the use of in-kind donations.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Is a key member of the ARC management team.
  • Recommends updates to ARC policies and procedures as they relate to food services.
  • Communicates effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

Other Duties

  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in culinary arts, food management training or equivalent experience.
  • Food Safe Certification required.
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 or equivalent required.
  • Clear TB skin test.
  • Clear criminal record check.

Experience:

  • 2 years related supervisory kitchen experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing food service operations, including meal planning, preparation, and service.
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate a team of kitchen staff, volunteers, and program participants.
  • Experience in supervising personnel, providing guidance and training, and fostering a positive work environment.
  • Experience in developing menus that meet the nutritional needs and preferences of diverse populations, while considering budgetary constraints and available resources.
  • Experience in managing inventory levels, ordering supplies, and controlling food costs to ensure efficient operation and minimize waste.
  • Familiarity with health and safety regulations, sanitation standards, and food handling procedures.
  • Experience in ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and implementing measures to maintain a safe and hygienic kitchen environment.
  • Strong cooking skills and knowledge of various cooking techniques, recipes, and food preparation methods.
  • A solid understanding of nutrition principles and the ability to create balanced and nutritious meals.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to communicate effectively with team members, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions under pressure. Capacity to troubleshoot issues related to menu planning, food preparation, staffing, and logistics.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing circumstances and needs within the organization. Willingness to work collaboratively with other team members and adapt to evolving priorities.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate record.
