Position Overview

Under general supervision of the Manager, Youth BIOLab or the Educational Assistant, and while demonstrating a commitment to the Mission, Values and Management Philosophy of St. Boniface Hospital, the Education Liaison is involved in all aspects of the operation of the Youth BIOlab, including the creation, delivery and support of programming for a wide variety of students from across Manitoba. The Education Liaison will have a significant role in supporting our work with Indigenous students both in the lab and in rural, remote and northern communities.

Experience

  • Experience in education or outreach would be a significant asset.
  • Experience working in a laboratory and familiarity with common lab procedures.
  • Experience working for an educational program, especially in a Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) field.
  • Experience organizing events and presenting to the public.
  • Experience maintaining collaborations with networks and partners.
  • Experience interpreting complex scientific topics for a general audience.
  • Experience working on projects independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience scheduling and organizing people, events and equipment.
  • Experience working with computers (such as Microsoft Office programs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural setting.
  • Experience with cell culture and biosafety procedures an asset.
  • Knowledge of experimental design procedures.
  • Knowledge of planning and working in a cooperative environment.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous history in Manitoba.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Bachelor of Science degree with preference given to a focus on biology or other life sciences is required.
  • Bachelor of Education degree with biology/science major would be an asset.

NOTE: An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bilingual in French considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing to engage diverse audiences.
  • Ability to manage full classes of students and be assertive in front of large groups.
  • Ability to facilitate learning for diverse audiences using a variety of approaches.
  • Ability to interpret complex scientific information from primary literature for grade 5-12 audiences.
  • Ability to assess target audiences' needs and interests to support planning and development of outreach programs and initiatives.
  • Curious and engaging.
  • Enthusiastic about learning!
  • Personally connect with others from diverse backgrounds and age ranges.
  • Exercise sound judgment and patience when working with children.

Physical Requirements

  • Physically able to transport equipment when visiting schools.
  • Physically able to be on your feet for a full day of teaching.
  • Must hold a class 5 license.
  • Must own a car and be willing to travel locally for outreach programming.
  • Must be willing to travel multiple times per year to remote/rural locations for outreach programming.
