Position Overview

This position is designated to provide assistance to Biomedical Engineering Technologists in the performance of their duties, and to expose and familiarize students currently enrolled in a recognized Electronic Technologist program (Biomedical Engineering Diploma Program preferred) to medical equipment, to the hospital environment, and to the procedures and activities of a Biomedical Engineering Department.

Under the direct supervision of the Lab Manager or Biomedical Engineering Technologists, the incumbent may be responsible for the performance assurance (performance verification, preventive maintenance, and safety testing) of a variety of medical equipment and accessories, as well as other technical and support work that enables the Biomedical Engineering Department to carry out its mandate. The incumbent may also carry out specifically assigned tasks relating to simple equipment repair and incoming inspection, i.e. assembly of (as required) and performance verification of equipment including the documentation of results.

The incumbent carries out all tasks in a professional manner consistent with accepted department programs, policies, guidelines and practices, including documentation of all work performed.

Experience

  • Must have good mechanical aptitude and experience working with simple electronic test and repair equipment (DVM, soldering iron, de-soldering iron and hand tools).

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Complete high school education, Manitoba standards, required.
  • Currently enrolled in a recognized Electronic Technologist program (Biomedical Engineering Diploma Program preferred).

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proficiency in PC use and office productivity software applications such as word processor, spreadsheet and database preferred.
  • Position requires interpersonal and communication skills, willingness to learn, the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, personal organizational skills, and a customer service focus.

Physical Requirements

  • Position involves walking fairly long distances within the HSC, long periods of standing, and lifting equipment, supplies, parts, etc. (approximately 25 kg).
  • The position routinely involves working with small delicate instrumentation requiring manual dexterity and normal vision, with or without correction.
  • Incumbent may be exposed to solvents, cleaning agents and chemicals commonly used in electronic maintenance.
