JOB PURPOSE
The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for the delivery of patient care that promotes the safety and well-being of all patients throughout the organization on the assigned shift. The Nursing Supervisor plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates all intradepartmental and interdepartmental activities, making critical decisions about global staffing issues and operations that impact patient care on assigned shift. This position is the designated on-site hospital administrator after normal business hours and therefore is responsible for all activities within the hospital in the absence of administration and/or department managers. This position requires a sound knowledge of nursing practice and exceptional leadership abilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
- Nurse registered in the Province of New Brunswick
- Post graduate education in administration or an equivalent combination of education and managerial experience
- Nursing administration certification desired
- Minimum 5 years of nursing experience
- Basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel)
- A minimum of 2 years' experience as a first-line manager is desired, coupled with 3 years clinical nursing experience required.
- Broad understanding of patient care processes
- Able to apply principles of managerial and leadership theory
- Must be flexible with work scheduling.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with groups as well as independently
- Committed to continuous professional development
- Ability to attend work on a regular basis

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Evaluates facility risks, reports, and liaises with senior leadership/admin on call
- Evaluates nursing resources and trends for the best utilization of existing resources, including observational care needs
- Liaises with managers on immediate staffing needs 0-48hrs, reviews staffing assignments across the inpatient units and makes recommendations, adjusts assignments when necessary, based on changes in census, acuity, sick calls, etc.
- Acts as a clinical resource for staff when they require direction/input; supports staff in the interpretation of practices and policies
- Leadership role in clinical and non-clinical emergencies
- Acts as a clinical resource to prioritize bed assignments, ensures safe and timely patient placement, manages bed flow, and provides direction/input to ensure effective bed utilization
- Responsible for providing leadership, supervision and direction to admitting, ED and nursing units during critical bed shortages
- Rounds on units to identify barriers to bed availability/placement and collaborates with healthcare team to resolve challenges and enhance patient flow
- Acts as the highest level of decision making after hours within nursing for current situation to meet patient care needs
- Participates in project work as related to staffing, bed flow, and other duties as required
- Develops and maintains good public relation skills with patients, public hospital staff, and physicians
