Job Summary & Key Responsibilities | This Part-Time Academic will be responsible to direct the New Music Ensemble from September 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026 (Fall & Winter terms). This ensemble will perform the works of students enrolled in the Composition program as well as creating their own repertoire through deep listening and collective improvisation. The works performed may be traditionally notated or use creative strategies outside traditional notation, such as graphic and text scores, and scoreless instant composition. Rehearsals are held weekly, resulting in a public performance each term. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: organization of the participants; scheduling, planning and preparation of rehearsals and concerts; overseeing the distribution of scores when applicable, implementing ensemble's Method of Assessment. The director must coordinate with the Associate Director of Productions, Voice Area, and the productions administrator regarding the selection of concert repertoire within the context of developing the School's multi-year plan, including regarding commissions of new works and organization of special collaborative endeavours. This is an hourly-paid position reporting to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts. |
Qualifications/Requirements of Position | MMus or equivalence; significant experience as a performer and ensemble director; specialization in new and improvised music; knowledge of extended performance techniques and modern approaches to music notation; effective organizational and communication skills.
