Job Summary
As the first university-based common law school in the nation, the Schulich School of Law offers a unique and enlightened approach to legal education. A diverse curriculum, leading specializations, and internationally recognized faculty provide exceptional opportunities in all facets of legal education. Reporting to the Associate Dean, Academic, the Accessibility and Wellness Advisor will support equitable access to a legal education, as well as access to resources and initiatives that support student wellbeing, encouraging student retention and academic success in the Juris Doctor (JD) program.
Key Responsibilities
  • Acts as the primary liaison between the Schulich School of Law and the Student Accessibility Centre (SAC). Proactively facilitates and engages in capacity building and education between the Schulich School of Law and the SAC, ensuring shared understanding of required competencies and implications for how accommodations are assessed and implemented in the JD program.
  • Responds to student inquiries and requests related to accommodations and academic dispensations based on medical or compassionate grounds. Refers students to appropriate supports. Works with students to facilitate implementation of SAC accessibility plans.
  • Works with faculty and the Centre for Learning and Teaching to identify proactive curricular approaches to mitigate barriers and need for individual accommodations (support for Universal Design for Learning initiatives within legal contexts).
  • Consults with faculty members with respect to individual accommodation plans and dispensations in their courses and advises faculty on the implementation of in-class accommodations where necessary.
  • Designs and implements comprehensive wellness programming that equips students with practical tools to foster individual self-care, promotes help-seeking behaviour, raises awareness, and reduces mental health stigma. Evaluates programming to determine what was successful, and to identify gaps and opportunities. Collaborates on and supports student-led initiatives in this area.
  • Proactively builds a network of wellness supports and resources across campus and in the community specific to the needs of JD students.
Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree plus three years' experience in the provision of access, equity, or student support and in the provision of training/education on accessibility, equity, or student support issues (or an equivalent combination training and experience).
  • Experience in dealing with issues related to student accessibility and accommodations and familiarity with accessibility related issues and concerns.
  • Experience interpreting, communicating, and applying procedures, policies, and methods.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a time-sensitive, shifting and often stressful work environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. Experience in coordination, in public speaking and presentations and in administrative writing.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills. Ability to multitask, work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, and meet firm deadlines.
