This job is responsible for ensuring live races and morning training are on schedule, supporting the overall safety of horses and jockeys, and ensuring live race post parades are orderly.

Duties

  • Ensure that ambulance and attendants are in position and the track is safe to open for the morning training via two-way radio with security and clocking departments
  • Ensure track rules are being followed during training. Advise Stewards of any violations when necessary
  • Deny privileges of riding and/or recommend to the ORC any change in status or possible revoking of ORC licence for any violations or safety issues when observing the track, horses, exercise riders, pony riders and/or jockeys
  • Assist exercise riders when necessary during training
  • Ensure all riders have proper equipment (i.e. helmets with chin straps, vests, boots with heels)
  • Alert ambulance attendants and Security when accidents occur during training
  • Lead post parades to ensure horses reach the starting gate on time for live races
  • Maintain an orderly post parade for television during live races
  • Assist jockeys, Starting Gate crew and pony riders, as required
  • Secure loose horses from the post parade in order to prevent injury to jockeys, horses and late scratches.

Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge in managing/controlling horse behaviour
  • Advanced knowledge of ORC regulations on post parades
  • General knowledge of racing department policies and practices
  • General understanding of a racing card (i.e. knowledge of racing distances)
  • Expert skill in riding horses
  • Expert ability to ride a horse at full speed in order to chase and catch loose horses
  • Advanced skill to control misbehaving horses
  • General communication, leadership, conflict resolution skills
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in riding and handling horses
  • Majority of job is working on the track(s) and paddock area; working directly with the horses.
