What can I expect to do in this role?

• Provide classification, rehabilitation programs, temporary absence coordination and discharge planning services to offenders
• Seek pertinent information for the classification, temporary absence and discharge planning processes by interviewing offenders, liaising with other sources and reviewing relevant documents
• Coordinate and confirm the participation of intermittent sentenced offenders in the Intermittent Community Work Program (ICWP)
• Facilitate the discharge planning, build and coordinate community reintegration plans with offenders
• Obtain and assess information about an offender's return to the community by assessing the risks associated with releasing an offender and build supports with the offender to mitigate risks
• Determine the current requirements and discharge needs of offenders by reviewing information from all clinical and correctional sources
• Facilitate inmate orientation programs and provide advice, counselling and information pertaining to institutional adjustment and program availability
• Complete internal classification reports to determine suitable unit placement of newly admitted inmates

How do I qualify?

Specialized Knowledge and Experience

• You have knowledge of offender rehabilitation and classification theory and practices
• You have understanding of risk and needs assessment tools (i.e. LSI-OR) as well as the temporary absence process
• You have knowledge of community agencies, services, and resources in order to make referrals and assist in the discharge process
• You understand the various sectors involved in the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders after release (i.e. mental health agencies, shelters, employment services, etc.)
• You have experience liaising with community partners and stakeholders in order to host case conferences and discuss issues
• You have knowledge of the justice system, court processes, and court documentation
• You are proficient with a variety of computer software packages and database systems (such as OTIS) in order to input and retrieve data as well as prepare and maintain reports/statistics

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You have knowledge of interviewing techniques to interview and assess inmate situation and needs
• You have oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with institutional staff, police, offender families, Probation and Parole offices, and community contacts
• You have collaboration experience within a multi-disciplinary team

Analytical and Evaluative Skills

• You can assess offender needs and suitability for various rehabilitative programs as well as make recommendations to the senior administrators regarding temporary absence applications
• You can prepare discharge plans
• You are able to identify and resolve issues
• You are able to understand and comply with relevant legislation (i.e. Ministry of Correctional Services Act), regulations as well as corporate policies and procedures
