At the Child and Parent Resource Institute (CPRI) we provide highly specialized trauma-informed mental health and developmental services. These services include Assessment, Consultation, Treatment, Research and Education. We work with local community services, building on what they have already done and use evidence based practices to adapt our approach to the unique needs of each child. CPRI is looking for Child and Youth Counsellors to provide care and treatment in accordance with the residents' individual treatment program and in liaison with their families and community agencies.

About the job

• Provide care, assessment and treatment in the provision of highly specialized residential treatment services for children and youth with complex mental health issues and/or developmental challenges
• Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, involving clinicians, guardians and community resources, to utilize best practices, trauma-informed approaches and using a bio-psycho-social model of care in the treatment of children
• Work during any assigned shift, during a 24 hour period to assist clients with normal activities of daily living, recognize and report any physical signs and symptoms of health conditions and provide assessment of clients in accordance to the Plan of Care goals
• Following completion of training, administer medications and treatments in accordance with CPRI Medication Procedure
• Provide individual care, counselling and group therapy for clients,
• Identify stages of behavioural escalation and respond in a clinically appropriate manner to deescalate the behaviour and develop strategies to reduce the clients concerning behaviours
• Following the philosophy of least intrusive intervention, you will respond to and manage high-risk situations using both verbal and physical de-escalation interventions as appropriate through a ministry approved physical restraint training program selected by our facility and in accordance with our policies
• Maintain clinical records and documents, actively participate in communication processes with partners and participate in plan of care meetings, etc.
• Attend regular training and development opportunities to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding, health and safety and well-being of children and youth being served

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

You have successfully completed the:
• Child & Youth Worker program, or
• Developmental Service Worker program, or
• Equivalent with a minimum of one year's experience in a related field following graduation.

Knowledge and Experience

• You have demonstrated experience providing care and treatment to children with physical, developmental and/or behaviour needs on-site and in the community
• You have knowledge of evidence based practices for children and adolescents with developmental delay and/or mental health problems, including behavioural modification strategies, learning theories, counselling skills and clinical practices
• You are able to develop and implement individual client treatment plan reviews, program evaluation, and educational programs and knowledge of professional, community and facility resources available to assist the child/family
• You are able to safely and effectively manage behavioural crisis situations and respond in a trauma-informed approach

Communication Skills

• You have effective oral and written communication skills to liaise and consult with relevant team members, and provide counsel to residents, their families and community agencies
• You are comfortable with, and adept at using, electronic / computerized communication platforms and virtual meeting tools

Analytical, Assessment, and Problem-Solving Skills

• You can gather and compile data from multiple sources to identify client needs
• You can develop/modify client plans of care

Organizational Skills

• You can manage conflicting priorities, make appropriate care decisions, and maintain adequate records

Additional Information

If you have not completed the Medication Training Program, administering medications and treatments as prescribed by a physician and in accordance with the CPRI Medication Procedure, you will be hired in the Child and Youth Assistant (CCW1) salary range ($1,082.59 - $1,195.32 per week) until this is successfully completed.
