Are you passionate about art, and love working with kids? We're hiring a dedicated Art Instructor to design and facilitate weekend and holiday children's programs. If you have experience in art instruction, and enjoy getting hands on in the studio, this role offers a rewarding opportunity to help children explore their creative potential in an inspiring, and inclusive environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and instruct original art lessons for children between the ages of 4 and 12
  • Plan activities in alignment with program descriptions, and the Principles of Healthy Childhood Development (High Five ®).
  • Modify lesson plans to accommodate participant needs
  • Prepare and organize art studio equipment, and materials, maintaining inventory of supplies
  • Supervise and delegate tasks to City of Markham youth volunteers, and part time program assistants
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with the public and internal staff
  • Prioritize the health and safety of participants, volunteers and gallery staff; Report all incidents including injuries and/or customer service issues to the Public Program Coordinator by completing health and safety forms (as required).
  • Adherence to City of Markham and Varley Art Gallery policies and procedures Qualifications
  • Must be available to work Saturdays and/or Sundays (mandatory); 10 week courses
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays

Qualifications

  • Pursuing post-secondary education in art, art history or related field (visual art, education, arts administration, preferred) or pursuing a Teaching Certificate in an arts related field.
  • 1 to 2 years’ experience working with children in an instructional role
  • Minimum age of 16 years old
  • Excellent verbal/written communication, leadership skills
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C Certificate as recognized by the WSIB (mandatory)
  • Clear Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) (mandatory)
  • High Five – Principles of Healthy Child Development Certificate (PHCD) (mandatory)
