  • Part-time from March 21, 2025 to May 19, 2025
  • Full-time from May 20, 2025 to August 27, 2025

JOB SUMMARY

Manages the Markham Museum Summer Day Camps. Has oversight responsibilities for curriculum-based program planning, program delivery and administration. Oversees approximately 100 campers per week ranging from 4 to 16 years of age, while supervising and coaching up to 25 staff including supervisors, counsellors, specialists, and volunteers.

Ensures consistency in camp policies and processes including training and communication in conjunction with other camp directors as required.

Through strategic leadership and programming, enables children and youth to develop skills, make friends, socialize and build self-esteem. Accountable for day-to-day operations under the guidance of the Museum Program Coordinator, ensuring camp activities are safe, educational, inclusive, high quality and meets the Museum's overall goals.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides daily direction and support to camp supervisors and camp staff as required. Plans and schedules camp staff resources, routines, schedules and procedures to ensure successful program delivery.
  • Oversees daily activities across the camp(s), ensuring programming is effective and adapted to camper needs with regards to safety, hygiene, weather, breaks etc.
  • Oversees the development, implementation of STEAM, history and environment-based educational day camp programs, with an emphasis on early settlers, simple machines, urban nature, archaeology, fashion, textiles and ceramics.
  • Oversees and ensures staffing for camp extended care program.
  • Prioritizes child well-being, safety and protection throughout the camp(s). Evaluates situations for potential risks to the safety, protection and well-being of campers and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks.
  • Acts as a leader role model, fostering a positive learning environment where people feel included as members of a team and are motivated to work towards common goals.
  • Serves as an ambassador for the Corporation of the City of Markham, liaising with camp supervisor and resolving any issues with the support of the Museum Program Coordinator. Displays a heightened sense of customer service.
  • Provides regular updates and feedback to the Museum Program Coordinator
  • Plans and implements camp staff training. Plays a leadership role in camp preparations as well as regular meetings.
  • Ensures adherence of policies and procedures working closely with other directors to ensure consistency under the guidance of the Museum Program Coordinator.
  • Provides on-going training, coaching and recognition to staff and volunteers. Provides regular feedback and completes formal performance assessments for all direct reports. Will assist with recruitment and screening of camp staff.
  • Assist with interviewing, selecting, training and evaluation of camp staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure coordination with all divisions of the Museum to ensure that the camp runs smoothly and that all necessary knowledge and artefacts are secured.
  • Implement and ensure completion of parent camp evaluations as well as staff evaluations of camp.
  • Controls supplies and equipment inventory for sessions, ensuring that all necessary supplies and equipment are ordered and received in accordance with City policies.
  • Oversees and manages camp purchases and budget in accordance with City policies and budget.
  • Demonstrates the confidence and ability to make decisions independently of peers and in the best interests of the campers. Resolves problems and conflicts effectively as they arise.
  • Reports all incidents promptly and thoroughly to the Museum Program Coordinator using incident/accident report forms and processes. Maintains camp documentation, including registration information, attendance records, permission and waiver forms and timesheets.
  • Completes a full report on the camp session including feedback and recommendations to the Museum Program Coordinator at the conclusion of the summer.
  • Responsible for effective and efficient communication to all stakeholders including parents, campers and staff.
  • Attends special events as required
  • Oversees attendance and sign in and sign out procedures.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Currently enrolled in, or graduate of, a post-secondary institution in Recreation, Museum Studies, education or related field.
  • Past camp experience. Experience in a senior supervisory capacity managing staff and/or volunteers.
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR 'C' required;
  • HIGH FIVE Healthy Child Development is required
  • Must be able to provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Extensive knowledge of program planning and child development stages.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, organizing and carrying out both regular daily and special programs.
  • Knowledge of museum themes including History, Environment, Science and Tech.
  • Knowledge of STEAM programming.
  • General interest in the Museum field. Demonstrated creativity and innovation in program planning skills.
  • HIGH FIVE Quest 2 is an asset;
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or Behaviour Management is an asset.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Acrobat); xplor experience is an asset;
