Applications are now being accepted for the temporary full-time position of Public Education/Fire Prevention Division Summer Student in the Markham Fire and Emergency Services Department, Office of the CAO. Reporting to the Division Chief - Prevention, Risk Mitigation, this position will conduct various activities in support of the public education, fire prevention, department goals and objectives, and special projects as assigned.

Note: This is an in-office (Monday to Friday) position and the primary work location will be Station 99 (Bur Oak Ave & Highway #7)

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the delivery of community fire and life safety education programs
  • Analyze statistical information
  • Reviewing the community risk assessment
  • Coordinate with the Public Education Team for MFES participation at special events/programs, etc.
  • Maintain the Public Education Event Calendar
  • Assist with Social Media promotions and campaigns
  • All duties assigned by the Fire Chief or Deputy Fire Chief(s)
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends when required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • NFPA 1035 Professional Qualifications for Public Fire and Life Safety Educator
  • NFPA 1031 Level I is an asset
  • Have an understanding of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Fluency in a language other than English is an asset
  • Thorough understanding of social media is essential
  • Effective administration and organization skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment with minimum supervision
  • Completion/enrolled in Post-secondary education in related field
  • Valid Class G driver's license and maintenance of Ontario Class G Driver's license required. As a condition of employment, you will be required to provide a satisfactory driver's abstract (No demerit points plus no more than 2 infractions - max of one moving and one non-moving conviction)
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening
