Summary:

The City of Markham, Canada's high-tech capital, is experiencing significant growth. As a result, the Development Services Commission is looking for a post-secondary student who is a dedicated self-starter to work in a fast-paced environment by assisting Community & Corporate Events team with event planning and execution. This position reports to the Supervisor of Community & Corporate Events.

The summer student position will provide back-up to our Community & Corporate Events staff and provides administrative support to the Community & Corporate Events team. Responsibilities include: assisting with management and organization of all working event files; event coordination support e.g. permits; receiving quotes from vendors for Corporate and City Events and upon approval, secure order/service; and performing general administrative duties as assigned.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Respond to events-related inquiries via e-mail and/or phone calls
  • Keeping excellent management and organization of all event working files
  • Prepare meeting agendas and minutes
  • Prepare presentations using PowerPoint and other related software
  • Supporting event coordination e.g. permits, etc;
  • Review event applications, policies and procedures;
  • Receive quotes from vendors for Corporate and City Events, and upon approval, secure order/service; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Previous customer service experience and interest in civil services preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong email and phone etiquette and effective listening skills
  • Strong writing skills - email and correspondence
  • Highly organized
  • Strong team approach and open/adaptable to change
  • Proficiency with MS Office (MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel)
  • College or University student preferred
  • Must be able to contribute positively to a respectful professional environment

Duration and Hours:

  • Beginning of May to end of August 2025
  • Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm, 35 hours per week (excluding Holidays)
  • Must be available to work - evenings, weekends, statutory holidays as required.
  • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions for extended periods.

Location:

  • On-site at the City of Markham office at 101 Town Centre Boulevard, Markham, ON
  • Will be required to undertake field visits for site verification periodically as required
