Summary:

The City of Markham, Canada's high-tech capital, is experiencing significant growth. As a result, the Development Services Commission is looking for a university/graduate student who is a dedicated self-starter to work in our fast-paced environment by supporting the development of the Transportation Master Plan, Environmental Assessments, and other ongoing studies, conducting active transportation initiatives and events, traffic and transportation data collection and analysis, research and other administrative work assigned. This position reports to the Project Manager of Transportation.

This summer student position will assist in the day-to-day needs of the Transportation business unit within the Engineering Department.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in preparing and conducting active transportation educational and promotional programs and initiatives related to, but not limited to, Markham Cycling Day, Markham Cycles Bike Hub, Active School Travel, and other outreach events.
  • Assist in event planning and setup, program evaluation, grant or award application preparation, background research, and other activities to promote active transportation in Markham.
  • Prepare City-initiated engagement materials and support stakeholder engagement activities on transportation projects.
  • Conduct site visits and observations to support project assessment and data collection.
  • Assist with internet research and literature review on specific transportation or traffic engineering topics, preparing summary and presentation on research as required.
  • Support ongoing and key studies/projects undertaken by the Transportation group, such as the Transportation Master Plan, School Zone Safety Guide, and Environmental Assessments.
  • Attend meetings and take meeting minutes.
  • Assist with day-to-day administrative duties, including consolidating digital engineering reports and other reference materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary institution in Environmental Studies, Engineering, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, or a related field of study.
  • Understand the basic rules of the road for traffic, bicycles, and pedestrians.
  • Able to bicycle comfortably on lower-speed roads. Having formal cycling training would be an asset.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Knowledge in InDesign or another graphic design software would be an asset.
  • Ability to work concurrently on multiple projects/assignments and meet regular deadlines independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, data entry, and telecommunication skills. Ability to work on own initiative and to organize and coordinate multiple assignments.

Duration and Hours:

  • Summer term, typically including May - August 2025
  • Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, 35 hours per week (excluding Holidays)

Location:

  • On-site at the City of Markham office at 101 Town Centre Boulevard, Markham, ON
  • Off-site to support events and outreach opportunities within Markham.
