Summary:

The City of Markham is experiencing significant growth. As a result, the Development Services Commission is looking for a university/graduate student who is a dedicated self-starter to work in our fast-paced environment by assisting with project management support and research to implement strategies and projects related to development application review processes. The successful candidate must have a good understanding of project management methodology and principles. This position reports to the Project Manager, Strategy & Innovation Team.

The summer student position will provide project management support, research, and analysis within the Strategy & Innovation Team.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide in-depth technical assistance, research and evaluation of development application processes
  • Assist with coordination and documentation of processes and procedures related to development application process improvement projects
  • Undertake and/or assist with research and implementation of new projects
  • Assist with analyzing and reporting of development application indicators
  • Research emerging project management principles, planning & development issues
  • Assist project managers on key issues that arise during projects
  • Prepare meeting agendas and minutes
  • Prepare presentations using PowerPoint

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a University program in Public Administration, Business Management, Urban Planning, Engineering or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in researching complex issues
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and planning processes
  • Good report writing and communication skills
  • Must have good analytical and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite of products
  • Proficiency with video conferencing software including Zoom and Microsoft Teams
  • Must have well developed computer skills
  • Must be highly motivated and have good communication skills
  • Must be able to contribute positively to a respectful professional environment

Duration and Hours:

  • Beginning of May to end of August 2025
  • Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, 35 hours per week (excluding Holidays)

Location: On-site at the City of Markham office located at 101 Town Centre Boulevard, Markham, ON
