Job Summary

The Varley Art Gallery of Markham is seeking a friendly, energetic, and creative individual looking to gain valuable experience in a gallery/studio setting. Under the primary supervision of the Public Programs Coordinator, the Art Program Instructor will design and instruct Winter Break children’s art camps.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design and instruct original art lessons for children between the ages of 4 and 12, and in alignment with program descriptions
  • Plan activities in alignment with the Principles of Healthy Childhood Development (High Five ®).
  • Modify lesson plans to accommodate participant needs
  • Prepare and organize art studio equipment and materials, maintaining inventory of supplies
  • Supervise City of Markham youth volunteers, and part time program assistants
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with the public and internal staff
  • Prioritize the health and safety of participants, volunteers and gallery staff
  • Report all incidents including injuries and/or customer service issues to the Public Program Coordinator by completing health and safety forms as required.
  • Follow and ensure adherence to policies and procedures working closely with other City staff to ensure consistency. This may include COVID-19 health and safety protocols

Qualifications

  • Pursuing post-secondary education in art, art history or related field (visual art, education, arts administration, event marketing, community arts programming preferred) or pursuing a Teaching Certificate in an arts related field.
  • 1 to 2 years’ experience working with children in an instructional role
  • Excellent verbal/written communication, leadership skills
  • Customer service skills
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C Certificate as recognized by the WSIB (mandatory)
  • Clear Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) (mandatory)
  • High Five – Principles of Healthy Child Development Certificate (PHCD) (mandatory)

Certifications that will expire during your work term must be re-certified prior to your start date. If you are registered for an applicable course, please list it on your resume along with the registration dates.
