The City of Mississauga's Legal Services Division is a full-service law department that handles a wide variety of interesting and rewarding files that directly impact the way people live, work and play in Mississauga. The City is searching for two (2) Articling Students for the 2026-2027 articling term, consisting of 10 months employment. Our hybrid work model will allow you to work remotely two days per week, except as required to attend courthouses and to attend our offices at 300 City Centre Drive, Mississauga, L5B 3C1 for in-person meetings to satisfy client needs and as required.
The successful candidates will also be participating in our exciting Articling Student Exchange Program with the Mississauga law firm of Pallett Valo LLP. In an effort to provide you with a more well-rounded articling experience, you will be participating in an exchange program with Pallett Valo for 4 weeks to gain an understanding of life as a lawyer in private practice.
The successful candidate will report to the City Solicitor and work with the Articling Principal and other members of the Legal Services Division. The Articling Student will work on files in the following practice areas: municipal law, public procurement and commercial law, real estate, leasing, expropriations, environmental, construction law, intellectual property, planning & development law, civil litigation, labour & employment law, and Provincial Offences Act prosecutions.
The Articling Students will do the following:
• conduct legal research;
• draft memoranda and other legal opinions;
• draft legal documents, such as by-laws, resolutions, contracts, agreements, and court pleadings or submissions;
• prosecute municipal by-law charges, Highway Traffic Act charges, and other Provincial Offences Act matters, on a weekly basis;
• be responsible for the carriage of simple files, appropriate for their level of knowledge and experience;
• provide support to lawyers on different matters relating to the operations of the City of Mississauga;
• accompany lawyers and prosecutors to client meetings, examinations for discovery, mediations, hearings and similar events to gain hands-on experience in the practice of law;
• participate in the Articling Student Exchange Program with Pallett Valo LLP; and
• perform other duties as assigned.
Legal Services is looking for two (2) Articling Students who possesses the following:
• qualified to commence articling in July, 2026 in accordance with the requirements of the Law Society of Ontario, for a period of ten (10) months;
• excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others;
• strong legal research skills and facility using digital and online reference materials and tools;
• excellent writing skills and the ability to draft clear, concise and persuasive memoranda, pleadings and other legal documents;
• strong oral communication skills, with a willingness to appear in court. Previous court, mock trial, mooting and/or legal clinic experience is an asset;
• strong organization and time-management skills and the proven ability to meet deadlines and prioritize work; and
• ability to attend, arrive on time, and travel between various City of Mississauga sites and courthouses.
