Job Description

Working with the Town of Newmarket's Recreation and Culture Team, means the opportunity to make a difference and connect with your community! Working in Recreation means being apart of something special, gaining valuable work experience and learning new skills. The Successful Candidate will:

Community Events Assistant:

1. Assist the Recreation Programmer with event preparation, set up and tear down.

2. Monitor participant arrival, check-in and/or registration, in addition to tracking event attendance.

3. Coordinate and oversee event related games, crafts, sports and/or other activations onsite at the event.

4. Supervise and manage special event volunteers.

5. Utilizes customer service skills to effectively engage with event participants and members of the public.

6. Monitors all aspects of the event to ensure the event operates safely and professionally.

7. Supervise the Special Events Stage Trailer when applicable.

8. Perform other duties as assigned, consistent with department policies and procedures.

Train Driver:

  1. Be responsible for the safe operation of the Tim Hortons Express Train during events.

  2. Assist the hostess/host in the boarding and unboarding of passengers from the train, in particular those who require assistance.

  3. Drive the train in a safe and responsible manner ensuring all passengers are aware of the safety rules prior to the train ride and complies to those rules during the train route, in accordance with established procedures.

  4. Effectively responds to incidents that may occur while the train is in operation.

  5. Identify and report problems/concerns to the Recreation Programmer, as appropriate.

  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

All:

  1. Previous experience coordinating, organizing and implementing events and/or activities.
  2. Familiar with Town of Newmarket and Town of Newmarket events.
  3. Ability to deal courteously and effectively with all levels of staff, Council Members, and the general public.
  4. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  5. Ability to work outdoors for up to 10 hours.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety legislation and associated procedures as it relates to ensuring the health and safety of patrons.
  7. Current Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification required.
  8. Due to the nature of the contacts of this position a Police Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the Town is required.

Community Events Assistant:

  1. Previous experience in overseeing others in a recreation environment/facility/event.
  2. Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  3. Availability/flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays and split shifts.

Train Driver:

  1. A valid Ontario Class "G" driver's license in good standing with the ability to undertake the safe operation of a train. A clean driver's abstract satisfactory to the Town is required at the time of hire.

  2. Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  3. Availability to work flexible and split shifts, including weekends.

Please Note: Certifications are not required at time of application but must be obtained prior to job commencement. The Town of Newmarket may offer opportunities for certification.
