JOB SUMMARY

As an Apprentice Meter Technician, you will participate in a recognized program to learn the Meter Technician trade and become a certified Meter Technician at Hydro Ottawa. During this time, you will work on new and existing installations across the full range of Hydro Ottawa's service offerings as you complete the necessary courses to qualify as a Journeyperson.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Metering Field Services, the Apprentice Meter Technician is responsible for installing, removing, replacing and inspecting meters and metering installation equipment for verification in customer residential, commercial, industrial and wholesale connected premises on low and high voltage installations. The Apprentice Meter Technician is also responsible for maintaining metering in Hydro Ottawa substations and private buildings across Hydro Ottawa's service territory and to assess and complete a final inspection of all types of meters used by Hydro Ottawa and those of our customers.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Install and maintain domestic and commercial meters on all services supplied by Hydro Ottawa

  • Install and maintain instrument transformers on secondary and primary metered services

  • Install and configure electricity metering devices and confirm their proper utilization in service

  • Install and troubleshoot electrical and electronic wiring systems

  • Install and maintain meters and metering equipment on IESO registered wholesale metering points

  • Complete Record of Inspection on metering installations in accordance with Hydro Ottawa Construction Verification Program

  • Participate in site pre-construction meetings

  • Work on the secondary side of metering circuits up to and including 44 KV Primary

  • Test circuits up to 750 volts

  • Test communication functionality on meters, ancillary devices and networks

  • Flash and verify circuits to ensure proper association of the meter to Service Premise

  • Complete cross phase analysis and vector diagrams on a variety of service types

  • Conduct investigations on high/low consumption accounts and potential power diversion scenarios

  • Apply for Work Protection permits with System Office and act as a Permit Holder at Metering jobsites

  • Engage customer by phone or in person, book meter appointments as necessary, deliver excellent customer service and represent the company in a professional manner

  • Maintain ongoing communications with all user divisions, internal and external clients

  • Create and update metering related work practices or procedures as required

  • Report damage to plant and hazards as encountered throughout Hydro Ottawa service territory

  • Complete minor repairs on small instruments and tools used by Hydro Ottawa

  • Promote quality and work within the Hydro Ottawa Metering Quality Assurance program, and support audit activities

  • Repair, calibration and final inspection of electricity meters in a lab type environment for both Hydro Ottawa and other utility meters

  • Maintain and provide support for meter Test Consoles as per Measurement Canada standards and requirements.

  • Evaluation and reporting on product condition, inspections for damage and tampering

  • Inventory control including physical issue and return of revenue meters, instrument transformers and metering supplies

  • Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time by Metering Supervisory Staff

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate of Community College Electrical Engineering Technician program or a combination of relevant education, training, and experience

  • Above average mechanical aptitude, reading and mathematical abilities

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • English essential, both oral and written

  • Bilingual (English/French) considered and asset

  • Valid Driver's License (Class G or equivalent) with an excellent driving record

  • Government of Canada Security Clearance

Selected candidates will require an above average score on a standardized mechanical, mathematical and reading comprehension assessment as an element of the selection process.

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are governed by the collective agreement between Hydro Ottawa Limited and IBEW Local 636.
