The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and the Communications & Technology Services Bureau Commander are seeking a qualified individual to join our Deployed Unit. In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will provide technical expertise and support in the operation and maintenance of telecommunication systems in the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

This position requires the ability to work on a regularly scheduled on-call basis.

This is an operational position requiring a high level of engagement with members and stakeholders. The successful applicant will be required to report to their assigned OPP worksite to perform their duties in accordance with Ontario Public Service workplace policies.

This posting is for a twelve (12) month temporary opportunity with the possibility of extension. The results of this competition will be used to fill current and future temporary and permanent opportunities with qualified eligible candidate within the unit during the next 12 months following the competition closing. Please notify your manager of your intentions to apply to this competition. Regular employees are required to have manager approval prior to accepting a temporary opportunity. When a regular member is the successful candidate for the temporary opportunity they would return to their home position at the conclusion of the temporary opportunity. Only business related expenses will be provided. There are no provisions for relocation, accommodation or travel (including meals or vehicles) for this position. Exact dates are to be determined.

What can I expect to do in this role?

To provide technical expertise and support in the operation and maintenance of telecommunication systems in the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• A valid Ontario driver's licence.
• Ability to pass OPP background security clearance.
• Ability to work on a regularly scheduled on-call basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of:
o Evolving radio technologies and land mobile radio solutions used in public safety.
o All telecommunication sub-systems and their inter-relationship, including microwave, mobile, portable and base radios and repeaters, diesel generators, standby and backup power systems, alarm reporting system, telephone and radio system switches, dispatch computer, communications consoles, voicemail systems, console and communications centre digital voice recording systems and archiving and network tie lines to ensure optimum operation of an emergency response system.
• Ability to plan, schedule and prioritize own work.
• Effective written, oral and interpersonal skills.
• Evaluative and problem solving skills to:
o Analyze condition, technical performance and capacity of existing system by isolating electrical, mechanical and software elements to determine their interaction and the nature of the problem;
o conduct research and analysis;
o identify and establish priorities to correct problems; and,
o make repairs, replacing parts devising a new solution to the problem.
• Analytical skills to:
o Assess a situation, carry out investigation and analysis, and make recommendations on need and feasibility for expansion, renovation, replacement or other corrective action; and,
o Interpret and apply new data/information, technology and design methodologies to telecommunications, operations and problems, within OPP control.
