Are you a food services professional looking to showcase your skills? If so, consider bringing your culinary expertise to the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre, where you will prepare, cook and serve meals to inmates within the correctional facility.

Please Note: This temporary position is irregularly scheduled on-call and the hours of work vary from 0-40 hours per week, with no minimum hours

What can I expect to do in this role?

• Cook and distribute meals for an inmate population of approximately 180
• Train, instruct, and supervise inmate helpers
• Prepare a wide variety of foods including complete meals, restricted diets, salads, snacks, and beverages
• Assist in maintaining an inventory of supplies for pre-determined menus and making alterations or substitutions as required
• Ensure meals are prepared to accepted standards and on time
• Maintain cleanliness, safety, and security in the kitchen
• Assume duties of Food Service Supervisor in absences
• Perform other duties, as assigned

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You currently have a valid Cooks Certificate or equivalent knowledge and experience to be eligible to write the certificate examination
• You are currently certified in First Aid and Heartsaver (or are able to obtain)

Food Services Knowledge and Experience

• You have knowledge of volume cooking/baking methods and safety principles
• You have experience preparing and assembling a high volume of meals
• You have knowledge and experience with various diets (i.e. lifestyle, medical, religious)
• You have knowledge of food safety as well as workplace health and safety practices and standards
• You have demonstrated ability to follow organizational policies/protocols in order to maintain safety and security of the kitchen area

Communication and Team Leadership Skills

• You can work with staff, inmate helpers, and service providers to address issues
• You have team leadership skills to provide instruction and direction to kitchen helpers and inmate helpers in cooking methods and kitchen cleanliness and appraise performance
• You have written communication skills to prepare various reports

Other Skills

• You have analytical and problem-solving skills to identify, assess, and resolve equipment/appliance malfunctions, supply shortage, sanitation and hygiene control, and food service issues
• You have basic computer skills to input, track and record data
