Position Summary

de Souza Institute is hiring an Advanced Practice Nurse Educator for a full time contract position. The institute supports health care professionals obtain their specialized skills required to deliver cancer care, guide and help patients and their families throughout their journey, from prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, to palliation. de Souza Institute courses are offered primarily online with the occasional course offered through webcast and/or in-person.

The institute is part of the University Health Network Professional Development Portfolio.

The Advanced Practice Nurse Educator (APNE) works within the de Souza Institute, Professional Development portfolios, under UHN Education.

Working with the Institute's education and information technology teams, and in conjunction with UHN Education's strategic plan, the Educator will lead the development and implementation of oncology education programs for health care professional across Canada, with clinical foci of oncology and palliative care. This will be achieved through collaborating with all levels of the interdisciplinary teams and organizations, implementing and evaluating processes to enhance knowledge, skills and attitudes of health care professionals throughout Canada. The Educator competencies focus on education and staff development, collaboration, scholarly/research activity, and leadership/change management.

Duties

  • Utilizing principles of adult education to develop/design, plan, and deliver/provide educational programs/activities which facilitates the development of oncology and palliative care specialized clinicians;
  • Encouraging, promoting and facilitating continuous learning for the health care team and to ensure constant improvement in the quality of oncology and palliative care services;
  • Use best practice in education to assess learning needs, develop, design, deliver and evaluate educational programs.
  • Collaborate with others to promote enhanced development and delivery of quality oncology nursing education internally and externally.
  • Contribute to the scholarship of teaching, discovery, application and integration of knowledge through research and scholarly work.
  • Lead in the creation of a preferred future for nursing education and professional practice.

Qualifications

  • Must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario and able to practice without restrictions
  • Masters degree in Nursing or Education required
  • Successful completion of de Souza Institute's Provincial Standardized Chemotherapy and Biotherapy course and in good standing with the Chemotherapy Competency Maintenance course
  • Minimum three (3) years experience in chemotherapy and biotherapy administration and care required
  • Current CNA Oncology Certification required
  • Theoretical and practical experience in adult education including learning needs assessment, educational program planning, curriculum design, and evaluation
  • Excellent leadership, time management, facilitation skills
  • Ability to be adaptable, build trust, provide coaching and collaboration, facilitate change and promote continuous improvement
  • Ability to motivate staff and create an environment conducive to learning and team building
  • Able to lead in an Interprofessional team environment
  • Able to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team
  • Able to effectively use information technology
  • Experience in behavioral health and/or acute care environment preferred
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in oncology nursing required with experience in palliative care an asset
  • Previous experience as an Educator considered an asset
