About the job
In this position, you will: • Coordinate the execution of various legal documents from inception to completion • Conduct legal research and analysis of existing legislation and precedent legal matters, interpreting restrictions and advising counsel on general legal positions taken by client ministry • Prepare legal documentation and/or file summary relating to pleadings, lists of documents, notices of motions, agreements, Orders-in-Council and proposed regulation and legislation amendments • Review evidence, records and other documents for suitability and conduct inquiries to determine the degree of liability against the Crown • Assist in the process of identifying and retaining private sector counsel • Liaise with all levels of Ontario Court of Justice in scheduling appearances
What you bring to the team
Legal knowledge:
You have knowledge of: • legal office methods, procedures and related policies and statutes (example: Rules of Civil Procedure, Provincial Offences Act, relevant federal and provincial statutes) • court administration practices and procedures • legal principles and procedures, search vehicles, legal formats, style terminology and phraseology
Communication and interpersonal skills:
• You have oral communication skills to interact with members of the legal profession, the public, all levels of government and court administration officials with tact and courtesy • You have written communication skills to prepare legal documents, letters and case summaries clearly and concisely • You have interpersonal skills to diplomatically explain legal issues and process requirements
You can: • select appropriate legal terminology/phraseology, style and format when preparing legal documents from precedents or information contained files • determine data sources, prepare information pertinent to case histories and determine relevancy to legal issues • conduct legal research and assess file information • identify legal problems and legislative implications and recommend courses of action • handle a large volume of documents and set priorities to meet conflicting demands in a high-pressure environment
Computer skills:
• You have the ability to operate a computer and use software such as Word, Excel, Access, QuickLaw and LSIS for time docketing, and to prepare legal documents, spreadsheets, graphs and reports
