The Ministry of the Attorney General, Civil Law Division, seeks an experienced counsel with recent civil litigation experience to join the legal team at the Crown Law Office - Civil ("CLOC"). This is an opportunity to work in an exciting and supportive legal office on high-profile and cutting edge s. 35 constitutional cases.

As a member of CLOC, you will be working in a dynamic and collegial legal environment representing the Crown in Right of Ontario at all levels of court on Indigenous-related civil litigation matters, including actions, applications, judicial reviews, appeals and interventions.

About the job

Duties will include:

• Representing the Crown in Right of Ontario in Indigenous-related legal proceedings, including actions, applications, judicial reviews, appeals, and interventions.
• Managing a broad civil litigation practice involving s.35 constitutional issues.
• Briefing senior decision makers at the Ministry of the Attorney General and across government, including senior management through in-person briefings and/or the preparation of briefing materials.
• Travel throughout Ontario may be required.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

Knowledge and Skills

• You have demonstrated recent experience in civil litigation, including in-court advocacy (e.g. motions, applications and appeals), and trial or trial preparation experience.
• You have demonstrated significant experience leading complex civil litigation matters.
• You have demonstrated legal and professional judgment, analytical and interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
• You are comfortable and effective in briefing senior officials and decision makers.
• You have knowledge of public law and knowledge of Aboriginal law and Indigenous issues, including issues relating to s. 35 aboriginal and treaty rights.
• You are able to work under pressure, within tight timeframes in a high-volume environment, and can effectively and collaboratively work with a team.
• You have demonstrated great client service, have a proven record of building relationships with clients and colleagues and of fostering and creating a culture of diversity, anti-racism, equity and wellness in the workplace.
