ELIGIBILITY FOR THIS COMPETITION IS RESTRICTED TO STEP 1 CANDIDATES INCLUDING OPS ALOC AND OCAA LAWYERS living or working within 125 km of this location. Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.

Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members.

Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.

The Ontario Land Tribunal ("OLT") requires one (1) lawyer with direct experience working for or appearing before the OLT or another administrative tribunal, with demonstrated knowledge of land use planning and development, environmental law, land compensation, and administrative law.

The Ontario Land Tribunal is an administrative tribunal established under the authority of the Ontario Land Tribunal Act, 2021 ("OLTA") to adjudicate or mediate matters related to land use planning, environmental and natural features, heritage protection, land valuation, land compensation, municipal finance, and related matters. The creation of the OLT consolidated the Ministry of the Attorney General's five land tribunals into one organization. These tribunals included: Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (formerly Ontario Municipal Board), Environmental Review Tribunal, Board of Negotiation, Conservation Review Board, and Mining and Lands Tribunal.

About the job

The successful candidate will join the OLT team of lawyers delivering quality legal advice in support of OLT's mandate to deliver fair, efficient, and effective legal services to the OLT. Duties will include:

• Working as a team member in the OLT legal division within a fast-paced, time sensitive environment
• Appearing before the Divisional Court on behalf of the OLT on leave motions, appeals or applications for judication review
• Providing expert advice on a broad range of administrative law matters including land use planning and development law, environmental and heritage protection, financial or land valuation claims, or aggregate resource planning
• Drafting rules of practice and procedure or informational materials for use by the public
• Preparing, presenting, and updating educational materials for adjudicators and OLT staff
• Reviewing draft decisions at the request of an adjudicator

• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

Knowledge and Skills

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the role and function of quasi-judicial decision makers and administrative tribunals
• Demonstrated knowledge of administrative law and practice
• Proven judgment, political acuity with a solution-oriented disposition
• Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
• Proven ability to work effectively within a team and produce high-quality work under tight deadlines with changing and competing demands
• Demonstrated legal research and writing skills
• Practical knowledge of litigation advocacy related to judicial reviews and statutory leave motions or appeals.
