The High Risk Offender/Prosecution Support group is one of the practice groups in Crown Law Office - Criminal. The group is seeking counsel who will do primarily solicitor work, with a focus on requests for AG consent and providing advice to the Attorney General.

Working in the High Risk Offender/Prosecution Support group provides an unparalleled opportunity to liaise with Prosecutors and provide legal advice to the Deputy Director, Director, ADAG and DAG. Counsel will do legal analysis and draft opinion memos involving sophisticated legal issues related to a vast array of criminal procedures such as Direct Indictments, DO/LTO requests, and prosecutions requiring AG Consent.

Duties Will Include:

• providing legal opinions and guidance in relation to criminal offences and procedures which require the consent of the Attorney General, including requests for Direct Indictments and Dangerous Offender (DO) and Long-Term Offender (LTO) applications
• assisting prosecutors and law enforcement seeking the return of alleged fugitives from foreign jurisdictions through the extradition process
• working with investigators and Crown prosecutors to prepare requests seeking the assistance of other countries in gathering evidence abroad
• providing legal opinions and advice to the police, the Director of the Crown Law Office - Criminal and other ministry officials and other government departments and agencies.
• providing advice and education to Crown colleagues, police and other justice system stakeholders

• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

Knowledge and Skills

• Thorough knowledge of criminal and constitutional law, including statute and case law regarding the prosecution of criminal and quasi-criminal offences at all levels
• Proven research skills and analytical ability to organize a principled approach to cases and issues
• Demonstrated writing skills and criminal law experience
• Proven judgment and ability to apply appropriate legal analysis and determine appropriate remedies
• Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to manage a significant case load
• Knowledge and understanding of the role and function of prosecutor
• Integrity and demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
