Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.
Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members.
Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.
The Legal Services Branch for the Ministry of Mines and the Ministry of Northern Development (the "Ministries") has an immediate opening for an intermediate level legal counsel.
This position offers interesting work in a small and collegial branch.
The main focus of the work will be in providing regulatory and operational legal support and advice to the Ministry of Mines, including in respect of the Crown's duty to consult.

Duties will include:
• Providing written and oral legal advice in a variety of areas including interpretation of the Ministry's statutes and regulations, statutory decision-making, and the Crown's duty to consult • Drafting legislation, regulations, Orders in Council and other instruments • Providing written and oral legal advice to clients on the Crown's duty to consult and accommodate, litigation support for matters involving Indigenous issues, and providing negotiation support for land claims matters • Conducting legal research and analysis and providing advice through opinions and presentations • Providing legal support for issues management, communication products and the development of Ministry policies and operational approaches • Preparing briefing materials and briefing Ministry clients as required • Travel to the northern regions of Ontario as may be required • Delivering presentations and providing training to the Ministries' staff • Briefing senior management
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
Knowledge and Skills
• Demonstrated experience providing regulatory advice, including in developing and drafting legislation and regulations• Demonstrated experience in administrative law and resource development law • Demonstrated experience in Aboriginal law, including knowledge and understanding of the Crown's duty to consult • Familiarity with Ontario government approaches to Indigenous issues and the history of the Crown's relationship with Indigenous peoples • Knowledge of the mining industry and other natural resource industries • Demonstrated ability and judgment to help manage complex and contentious issues • Experience in and aptitude for legal research and opinion writing, statutory interpretation and policy development work • Excellent analytical and judgment skills • Highly developed political acuity • Excellent written and oral communication skills • Organizational skills and the ability to handle a high volume of work on short notice • Demonstrated commitment to excellent, responsive and solution-oriented client service • Demonstrated commitment to positively contributing to a diverse and inclusive team environment • Proven ability to build positive relationships with clients and colleagues
