Data Analytics Intern

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Data Analytics Intern will have the opportunity to gain real-world experience in data analytics and database management at a leading institute. The objectives of this role are to manage and analyze data from various sources and translate large data into actionable insights to support Vector's objectives around workforce development and research excellence. Reporting to the Data Analyst on the Research Operations & Academic Partnerships team, you will play a key role in ensuring the goals of the team relating to all data-related requests are met.

APPLIED INTERNSHIPS AT VECTOR

The applied internship program at Vector provides relevant, hands-on learning and work experience in machine learning and AI. During the paid internship, interns will have the opportunity to attend research, recruitment, and commercialization talks at Vector and connect with key stakeholders in the AI ecosystem. Applied internships may be full-time (36.25 hours per week) or part-time (20 hours per week) over the Winter academic term (January 6 - April 25, 2025) with an opportunity to continue over the Summer 2025 academic term. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Consistent with Vector's goals in this program to relieve disadvantages and alleviate the under-representation of Black and Indigenous people in AI, and to attempt to achieve equal opportunity in the field of AI, preference in hiring will be given to qualified Black and Indigenous persons, studying at or having recently graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institute, who self-identify as such in the application process. This initiative is designed to meet the criteria of a special program under the Ontario Human Rights Code.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Clean, upload, and maintain data in Google Sheets and Salesforce on a weekly basis;

  • Generate insightful data visualizations and/or an interactive dashboard from existing data to illustrate trends and key insights using Microsoft PowerBI and/or Google Sheets;

  • Assist with diagnosing and maintaining Python data scraping algorithms using Github actions via Scrapy and/or BeautifulSoup;

  • Assisting with automation workflows where needed using Salesforce automation tools and Zapier;

  • Develop ad-hoc data analytics reports in Google Sheets; and,

  • Other duties as assigned.


SUCCESS MEASURES

  • A strong ETL execution for Salesforce through an integration with Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office Suite;

  • Analysis of trends in Ontario's AI talent community with existing data and providing decision-making supports on engagement in AI talent community;

  • Reports generated on high-level insights; and,

  • Data visualizations/interactive dashboard created are accessible, with key outcomes highlighted, and integrated well with data inputs.


PROFILE OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • You are a self-identified Black or Indigenous student or postdoc (Indigenous ancestry or heritage - First Nations (status or non-status), Métis or Inuit) or a recent graduate.

  • You are in the second year or higher, studying at a Canadian university or college, or a recent graduate within 1 semester of graduation.

  • You have experience using Google Suite (e.g., Google Sheets, Google Drive), Excel and its advanced functions, and data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau.

  • You have experience managing CRM systems such as Salesforce and are able to perform Extract Transform Load (ETL) processes on large datasets.

  • You have basic proficiency with programming languages, especially Python. Experience with Scrapy/BeautifulSoup is an asset.

  • You have experience translating large datasets into actionable insights.

  • You understand the limits and constraints associated with data usage (e.g., privacy concerns, challenges associated with unstructured data or unlabelled data).

  • You are organized and efficient, with strong problem-solving skills.

  • You have experience with automation tools, such as Zapier and triggered workflows in Salesforce.

Compensation: $25/hour.
