The Position

The Ronald McDonald Playroom provides an engaging and supportive environment for outpatient clients and their siblings where they can meet other children and youth from the Holland Bloorview community. The Playroom staff are responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing a wide variety of adaptable recreation activities that cater to different interests and stages of cognitive and physical development. The goal is to create a safe, enjoyable place where "kids can be kids."

The Ronald McDonald Playroom is typically open to clients from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday, and may additionally open for evening and/or weekend events as needed. Staff shifts rotate monthly, Monday to Friday.

This staff role provides an opportunity to develop and to use a wide range of skills to engage children and youth with disabilities and those who are typically developing.

Key Responsibilities

Day to Day Operations

  • Provide clients & siblings with supervised opportunities for recreational activities and peer interaction
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding the care needs of their children or youth
  • Monitor and ensure that parents/guardians sign children/youth in and out of service and that they are aware of playroom policies and procedures
  • Support an environment that offers a wide variety of fun, developmentally stimulating activities that accurately reflects the individual recreation needs of clients & families who use the service
  • Ability to communicate in a sensitive, respectful, and courteous manner with children, parents, staff, students and volunteers
  • Train, supervise, support, and evaluate new volunteers, students, and casual staff as assigned
  • Work schedule supports the weekday operating hours of the Ronald McDonald playroom with flexibility to work occasional weekend or evening shifts as needed
  • Assist with client registration and staff scheduling for evening and weekend programs
  • Embrace Holland Bloorview's philosophy regarding client and family-centred care practices
  • Other duties as assigned

Maintenance & Evaluation

  • Maintain an orderly playroom and safe equipment within (includes sterilization/cleaning of toys, activity spaces, furniture etc.)
  • Follow all playroom policies and procedures for opening, operating and/or closing the playroom.
  • Regularly record stats that accurately reflect usage of the playroom
  • Manage program supplies and materials inventory (ordering, storing)

Organizational Partnerships & Mandates

  • Develop a familiarity with and ability to discuss the different resources and services available for clients and families
  • Maintain current knowledge and training in Holland Bloorview's Emergency Action Plans and practices safe program implementation within Patient Safety and Risk Management guidelines
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, support the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advance a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices
  • Adhere to organizational policies and procedures
  • Co-ordinate and implement playroom support for evening programs in partnership with other programs/departments
  • Participate in agency meetings as required (i.e. practice councils, business meetings etc.).

Qualifications

Education

  • Diploma or degree in Early Childhood Education, Therapeutic Recreation
  • Membership in the College of Early Childhood Educators or Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) or Association of Child and Youth Counsellors preferred
  • Maintain updated certification in CPR & Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification required
  • HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) training is an asset

Other Requirements

  • Upon hire, staff are required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with their local police service and an Occupational Health Review.
  • Current CPR-C certification. If you do not have a current certification, you will be required to obtain it in a timely manner at your own time and expense.
  • Previous training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) is an asset - training will be provided during work hours to a successful candidate not holding current certification
  • Upon hire, participate in a new staff orientation

Experience

  • Previous work with children/youth with disabilities (2.5 years - 18 years) required
  • Previous work with children/youth without disabilities (2.5years-18 years) required
  • Previous experience in recreation and leisure program planning & implementation preferred
  • Previous experience facilitating group recreational activities is an asset

  • Manage flexible working hours and organize time and meet deadlines

  • Understanding of and commitment to client and family privacy and confidentiality

Physical and Environmental Demands

  • A fast-paced environment requiring agility and considerable physical activity.
  • Significant walking, bending, pushing/pulling, and possible physical interventions to maintain safety of children/youth in the playroom environment.
  • Required to lift/carry children or equipment or materials weighing up to 50lbs.
  • Routine use of cleaning and sanitizing solutions and products (training and applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided)
