Salary: $32.87 - $41.09 per hour (To commensurate with experience and consistent with UHN compensation policy)
Shifts: 7 am- 3 pm Weekdays
Status: Full-Time Temporary (1 year maternity leave)

Position Summary:

University Health Network (UHN) is looking for an experienced professional to fill the key role of Surgical Veterinary Technician in our Animal Resource Centre. Surgical Veterinary Technicians, within UHN's Animal Resource Centre, are responsible for the daily operations of the surgical suites in the animal facilities. It encompasses surgical suite preparation; induction and monitoring of anesthesia; surgical assists; instruction in and assistance with various procedures; responsibility for drugs and supplies; monitoring biohazard and radioactive waste; laboratory animal technician duties and administrative duties; As required this position involves the performance of routine daily animal care duties, including feeding, watering, and cleaning the animals; daily treatments; maintenance of the physical plant in good working order; and providing assistance to research staff.

Duties

  • Surgical Suite Preparation and Maintenance - schedule surgeries, organize and set up surgical suites, obtain supplies, prepare surgical pack and sterilize instruments, ensure equipment is maintained and repaired.
  • Anesthesia and Surgery - perform anesthetic inductions, monitor anesthetic levels during surgery and recovery, surgical assistance at times.
  • Training and Assistance - provide training or assistance to research staff on various technical procedures, blood sampling, animal restraint etc.
  • Drugs and Supplies - order and dispense various drugs and surgical supplies under veterinary supervision, maintain records, inventories etc.
  • Plant Maintenance and Waste - perform routine daily cleaning and maintenance in accordance with standard operating procedures, ensure approved biohazard waste is autoclaved and monitor use of radioactive substances within facility
  • Ensure surgical rooms are in compliance with standards issued by the Department, CVO, OMAF and CCAC
  • Animal care and health - perform routine daily animal care duties as needed. Feeding, watering, room checks, transferring animals, daily health monitoring and observations, administer treatments advised by veterinarian etc.

Qualifications

  • ​​​​​Completion of a Veterinary Technology or recognized equivalent program
  • RLAT certification with Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science preferred.
    Minimum one year practical and related experience
  • 1-3 years of experience in a laboratory animal facility or a veterinary clinic
  • Experience handling laboratory animals; both rodents and larger animal species
  • Ability to utilize Excel, Word and Outlook at moderate proficiency
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • No known allergies to animals
  • Exercise initiative and time management skills
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Exercise good judgement with ability to multi-task
  • Compliance with confidentiality requirements
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies
  • Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand
