Reports to: Senior Manager, Ethics Reviews Services
Work Model: Hybrid
Hours: 37.5 per week
Salary: $83,000 - $103,000 CAD
Shifts: Monday to Friday
Status: Temporary Full-Time
Closing Date: March 24, 2025

An integral part of the REB operations team, working closely with the Senior Manager, Ethics Review Services, the Team Lead is responsible for supervising REB Ethics Coordinator staff, managing the departmental workflow, providing support to staff through the development of tools and SOPs and education programs for the research community.

Supervision of Ethics Coordinators and Administrative Staff

  • Manage workflow and assignment of files to REB staff.
  • Provide mentoring and support for REB staff.
  • Promote consistency in the application and interpretation of regulations, policies and procedures by REB staff.
  • Assist Senior Manager in hiring, termination and evaluation of Ethics Coordinators and REB staff.

Manage Ethics Review workflow

  • Oversee management of the REB submissions in the CAPCR System.
  • Prepare reports on productivity and other stats on REB processes.
  • Oversee development of improved REB web-sites for better dissemination of new information, guidelines and forms.
  • Make recommendations for process improvement and implement them as applicable.
  • Monitor submission volume, review/processing time and workload to advise on staffing needs to maintain an efficient service.
  • Hire, train and terminate administrative staff. Carry out performance reviews.
  • Provide mentorship and professional development to administrative staff.
  • Liaise with other UHN service departments impacted by research studies (Legal/CTA, Privacy, CRSS, CRUs, Pharmacy, Health Records, etc.)

Manage Institutional Risk

  • Identify the nature of risk inherent in research studies submitted for REB review and manage assignments and workflow according.
  • Liaise with Bioethics, Legal/CTA and Privacy as required, particularly with respect to ethical issues, and privacy and legal risks and regulations.
  • Liaise with other key internal stakeholders, e.g. Research Quality Integration as required for clarification of regulatory requirements.
  • Exercising superior judgment, escalate risk management matters for direction and decisions where required.

Education

  • Collaborate with other support departments in the development of educational material and presentations on REB submission and review.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in a related discipline, or recognized equivalent required.
  • Completion of the TCPS CORE training.
  • Minimum 4 years practical and related experience and/or on-the-job training required.
  • Previous experience in a health or research administration environment.
